Eh, he's not really an antagonist though. More of an anti-hero. He doesn't set out on harming anyone in particular, he just doesn't see it as wrong to treat every fight as a death match. Even with Ryu, it's more about testing if the Satsui no Hado is the correct path than it is about killing Ryu to prove him wrong.

That doesn't make Ryu a Gary Stu, you fucking idiot. Ryu is canonically actually naturally more of a sore loser with a bit of an inferiority complex. He only seems peaceful and calm outwardly because he has trained to keep his emotions in check, but even he loses his cool every so often. That was a moment of weakness for Ryu and he's actually regretted it iirc. Ryu is actually far more of a complex character than people think.
