to be fair, pre witcher 1 CDPR was a bunch of literally who coders, and the witcher books were a very niche fantasy franchise with zero mainstream recognition, only really known among central european fantasy enthusiasts.

at that time it was probably a decent agreement. nobody expected the game to spawn a whole game series that would eventually blow up to AAA levels of popularity.

What did you fuckers expect? They don't own the witcher IP. They develop the games on a contractual basis with the right holders of the IP. So why would a dev studio be involved in making a TV series about said IP? The right holders probably thought a TV series would be a good idea to make some easy money seeing how everyone is in love with the games (more people care for the games than there are genuine readers of the novels).

Who cares? It's not like Witcher is a deep fuckin' story.

Yes and he actively works to write the stories for the games as well. He knows that some aspects of the novels just couldn't be adopted into the game so writes up whole new stories for them in his universe. Metro Last Light I believe the story is an original work. Video games can deliver proper stories.

The thing is they're not going to deliver the story the way a book normally does so some adaption must be required. It's no different when you adapt a work to a motion film or a stage play.

For instance a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde book is going to tell a different story if it is expressed in either written, stage play or motion picture form. It can even express a different story if it was painted in a series of stained glass window panels.
