It's similar to the first 3 Suikoden games, first two are rock solid because they were mostly 2D sprites on 2D backdrops fighting 2D enemies. then when jrpgs started taking their first incredibly clumsy steps onto PS2 and full 3D we got SO3 and Suikoden 3, both of which have aged like warmed over dog vomit visually.

They switched evolution to the PSP remake of 1s 3 hit system and it fucked everything up. In the beginning of the game you're basically god incarnate as you do 3 x the damage you're suppose to and by the end things get weird in the other direction and it throws off late game play making it more obnoxious than the original. It also broke several spells and a few other things. I had a copy pasta at one point but can't seem to find it now, summing up all the shit they got wrong on psp.

SO4 you could pretty much do everything in 1 big playthrough (something I much prefer) with just a bit of cleanup for Faize/Arumat. Did have some major grind, but hardly had to pay attention while doing it.

SO1 is a decent SNES era JRPG. Battle system feels a little weird on the SNES controller

2 had to go against the titanic FF7 so it was overshadowed quite a bit. Its a cute little game, but combat is boring and magic is both weak and slow

3 is when the combat gets fun

4 has even better combat, but its story is basically a parody of its own genre.

5 is just a clusterfuck as you have 7 people on the battlefield as opposed to 4/4/3/4

Given that they have approximately 520 characters to work with once you remove the SoD who appear in multiple games, I'm really surprised they haven't gone the Gacha route yet with Suiko. That list does get smaller if you take out all of the non combatants, but, you could throw them into another Gacha that uses a type of non premium currency and have them be your support staff.

I got pretty far in this game, up to the blue dragon zombie/robin wind I think and then I stopped, I remember being pretty bummed when I found out you spend most of the game on some medieval planet instead of exploring the galaxy, I tried playing through it again recently though on emulator, it's a lot more fun when you know what to expect and how to pace yourself, and also playing with jap voice instead of the awful dub. Didn't get that far though cause I had computer trouble a little while after I started.

The plot twist was bad but people hate on it for the wrong reason. Even the game hammers in the fact that their world is for all intensive purposes as close to real as it can get, so it's not a case of "it was all a game nothing matters!". The problem is none of the characters actually care about the consequences of it about 2 minutes after they go through, or undergo any significant development. They throw out all the intrigue with the galactic war and clandestine research plot they were building up for the whole game prior for what amounts to literally nothing.

But SO3's dub was good. You're right about SO5 though, it's only real issues were not much unique side content and Normal being too easy along with having to unlock the other difficulties, but you get roles to convert EXP to money or SP fairly early on to curb it a little. It's not a very large game in scale because of the budget, but it feels like it understands that and uses it's space to the best of it's ability.

Opinions I suppose but I felt it was way better than mediocre. One or two of the side characters were a little odd sounding (looking at you Farleen) but it only served to make them more memorable since they didn't show up often. The main character's voices all fit each character to a tee while having plenty of heart where it was necessary, and while it is a Japanese game, none of it was really set specifically in Japan, so I don't think just being Japanese really fits better because it's Japanese. But that's just how I see it. SO5 has dual audio but I think the dub is a bit better in that and has a lot more oomph to it at least in battle, I'd recommend to give both a go.

Being able to swap between everyone is a ton of fun and makes the large scale battles pretty impressive. It can get necessary on the harder difficulties too, which you really gotta play to get the true experience but it makes it even better.

You could say that, but yeah he has a ton of fun and spammable moves, though his moves also work really well in sync with each other so he's a blast to play as.
Moveset spoilers:He actually has a version of Dimension Door called Abyssal Gate, but it's a bit nerfed from it's insanely powerful SO3 version since it has much less range and you can't hold it since there's no Rage meter. The teleport function of it is much more useful though since CP isn't a thing and you can always equip 4 moves.

I refuse to believe you actually played the game from this post. About the only thing you said that was right was that Death Palm is actually one of his better moves despite being an early move, but that's still not best in all situations and he has many other moves that are on par or better depending on the enemy. Plus all his moves are unique to each other in both small and large ways and you can set him up to play pretty different based on which moves you pick. Also his normal moves are among the worst in the game when compared to the rest of the cast.

Death Palm has much faster recovery than Double Slash, so you can get a lot more out for more damage even at similar levels. Double Slash is mainly for stronger per hit damage and the knockdown.
The skill sets in 5 are mostly fine, 3 just had slightly more and more characters, but 5's are still well designed for the most part. I'd only argue Emmerson has 1 or 2 filler skills, but they wouldn't need much changing to be more unique and the rest of his moves still stand apart from each other.
