He basically was the most aggressive enemy in the game. Almost every other enemy in the game had a pause in their attacks, or trying to get close to you, or in shooting at you. The only real exceptions to these were few, like the unique acid spitter and its pack.
You either had to find a way to cheese him or beat him down with brute strength.

D3 isnt anywhere near a good game but I played through the story recently as a barbarian and I was surprised how well characterized the PC is. If you listen to every dialog and do every side quest and stuff there's a surprising amount of depth. They hit the wise warrior vibe perfectly. Makes me wanna play through with the other characters but Im worried it might not be nowhere near as good.

Din's Curse really shouldn't be forgotten. The graphics are not too impressive but the game is great. The monsters do their own thing with or without you: raid the town, kill rivals, create new factions, gain experience and levels, everything. Haven't tried Zombisite, the newest entry from the developer. Depths of Peril is alright and is set in the same universe as Din's but there's a lot more focus on helping out your faction than on the monster AI.

Necromancer is an incredibly strong character for solo play. You can get away with most stuff because of how much utility you have.

>poison explosion is alright
>poison dagger is even possible if you want to be silly
>corpse explosion is godly and usually paired with other skills
>nothing can threaten you because bone prison gets a bazillion hitpoints and there is no spell timer on it

The necromancer is well-rounded. The only semi-legitimate build that won't really work is trying to use iron maiden to kill.

Two-handed swords tend to have more sockets, higher range and get better damage even when wielded in one hand. The only sword that really compares to the colossus blade and the colossus sword is the phase blade. Berserker axes were pretty great.

Playing without the expansion is dumb. Play on patch version 1.08, the first version of the expansion, if you really want to play before the itemization got wonky.

It's all a matter of choice. You could just start on vanilla D2, then if you find it lacking you can convert your character over to LoD or start fresh.

Personally I prefer the expansion because druids and assassins are my favorite classes.

There was a job posting a few years back from Blizzard about restoring the classics, with StarCraft, Diablo II, and WarCraft III specifically mentioned.
Then StarCraft Remastered was announced. Then Blizzard announced that WCIII was getting updated to run better on modern hardware, which is something that just happened with StarCraft (although it didn't turn out too well.)
Because of that announcement, I imagine WCIII will be getting the remaster treatment next, but Diablo II's turn is coming.
