I find that the best way to be on people's good side is to be competent & helpful. I always make a point of fully mastering all my tasks at any job and then writing the steps down so I can easily explain them to others.

I do talk video games with some of my coworkers who play frequently, but for the most part we discuss life, politics, music etc. If you come off as "the gamer" then you aren't gonna do well. If you come off as "person with a broad set of interests who happens to like video games" no one will bat an eye even if you talk about something obscure so long it's related to a larger discussion in some way.
