LP1 has an okay single player but apparently awesome multiplayer during it's heyday.
LP2 is more co-op centric and the multiplayer is fairly unbalanced at times but regardless i think it's the best of the series.
I have not played 3 but it looks bland as fuck without the weird charm the previous games had.

Original just has more weapon combinations, and everyone only used like four anyway-green & red, blue & red, blue & green, and double green. GSH has better level design and melee options.
