It's one of those games where even though the story is terrible, you can just ignore it and dive straight into the mechanics of building a party and grinding to your hearts content.

If you're unsure, emulate one of the first two games using PPSSPP and see how you get on. It's a very love it/hate it kind of series so your mileage may vary.
