Q1 is literally the first brown&grey shooter, praised only for its use of fully 3D polygonal worlds and assets + the implications and features it introduced to MP world. The enemies, maps, weapons and core gameplay in SP were meh, and there was way too little foes to fight, and all of 'em were bullet sponges.

Doom 1 is a fucking classic and one of the best single player shooters ever made with a okay MU
Doom 2 is a good game but 1/3rd of its levels are straight trash and empty as fuck with better multiplayer because of better maps for it/weapons
Final Doom is half shit since TNT is ass but Plutonia is good
Doom 3 is okay
Doom 4 is solid and captures some of the magic of the originals but since it has a limited amount of max enemies on the screen/snapmap levels it can't touch Doom1/2
Doom 4s multiplayer is fun also has some gimmicks but feels like a older arena shooter slowed down somewhat.

A great series overall with its low point being mediocre at worst and its highest being masterful.

The problem with Brutal Doom, as stated many times over, is it brings people in and they start claiming it's the one and true way to play doom and start whining for Brutal Compatibility with every other gameplay mod out there. The gameplay balance also isn't very good, and the code is a fucking spaghetti nightmare, though normal players won't suffer from that particularly, though there was an older version where blood spatters could hurt players, that was stupid.

Deepest Reaches, Wormhole, Mil, and System Control are all great maps, and Sadistic, Blood Jungle, Legion of the Lost, and Into the Beast's Belly are all great tracks, and that's just naming my favorites. TNT is really underrated in my opinion.

I liked the attempts to make some less abstract maps, like there was a factory/mill themed map that had some working machinery and such. Pure abstraction isn't really my thing. I also liked the absurd gigantomania of some of the maps. Which was that one where you battle through a labyrinthine complex and in the climax emerge into an enormous canyon full of Arachnotrons with a Spider Mastermind in the end, which dwarfs the rest of the map but flows much faster because of how open it is? That was a cool contrast.

Pretty sure it's Central Processing. And yeah, TNT has some nice details between abstract map design like the pseudo-machinery and texture work, plus some of the night-time maps in the mid-game just look fucking stellar with the sky texture and how the maps are constructed. It's part of why I love Deepest Reaches so much.

compare each enemy individually and the enemy mechanics in DOOM 4 are more engaging. Old imps shoot a fireball and claw, slowly walk around. New imps lead shots with precision, shoot a faster fireball, have 3 different types of fireball (a fast one they throw while running, one that curves upwards to prevent you from jumping, and the standard one they have to stop moving to charge), navigate to vantage points, hang back to shoot while others go in for melee attacks, have a rapid melee attack, crawl up and around walls, have a quick sidestep dodge, and run quickly.

Old Doom has much more simplistic enemy design but compensates with more intricate level design and enemy placement. The AI in DOOM 4 is smart and moves around, constantly chasing the player. Because of their mobility and intelligence classic level design wouldn't really be possible. You can literally play the classic levels with new enemies and it's self evident it doesn't really work. New Doom doubles down on the combat and I like it more for that reason because combat is ultimately what levels existed to facilitate. It can't be argued the original has a perfect pace and balance that will never be topped but I like new Doom and it shouldn't be contrarian to say such a thing in a Doom thread. The thrill I get from nightmare, making split second decisions and keeping track of enemies from every corner leading shots, is not something I ever got in old Doom. Both are fantastic games with fundamentally different design philosophies.

I have a fantasy of doing a reskin of the game, maybe making some new enemy types, all themed around classic SHIELD comics. The player would be Nick Fury (the real one), levels would be AIM and Hydra facilities, standard soldiers would be AIM soldiers and such, pull from Marvel lore for the other enemies. If they removed the charging homing missile pinkies I'd like the enemies a whole lot more. The design of them is fucking horrible because if the way enemies spawn in closed arenas settings. They can spawn right behind you and one shot you with no way to dodge them once you hear them coming. If doom had regular level design without arenas they'd be fine because you could prepare for them and use your environment properly but they're always a surprise and always a nuisance now

Half of all that stuff you said about nuDoom is literally placebo. The whole "better AI" is resulted by the tinyass combat arena lockdown rooms that MAKE the enemies jump and leap around nonstop, giving an impression of more aggressive behavior. The oldschool maps are a fine evidence for this, as enemies got less room to do anything, because of their own bigger size.

Original Doom had way deeper gameplay balance and variation. Enemies alone had way wider spread on the possibility space, with the complete lack of cannon-fodder hit-scan enemies being one of the bigger missing elements in nuDoom. And then there's all the other NOT-combat things, such as supply management and secrets hunting, which actually is closely related to former. Original Dooms played quite a bit like faster paced survival-horror games, where the maps were like big 3D puzzles of sort.

The one thing that pisses me off about Doom 4 is you can't really bait enemies into melee safely, seeing as they swipe out so far and usually move forward. Infighting really isn't something you can reliably manipulate anymore either, enemies don't even deliberately target one another after getting friendly fire, it just happens by accident, they're 100% focused on you.

TNT is alright my gripe is it lacks consistency
One of the cool things about Plutonia is only two dudes map all the maps
So even if it is just a bunch of reveants and chaingunners, it's still pretty straightforward
TNT has maps that are gimmicky or try to fuck with veteran Doom players
Some maps are also too large for their own good

It's because of the random spawning and arena style that makes them so annoying. They're easy to dodge, easy to get behind, and easy to kill from behind, but fuck me I have been stuck at levels where you're forced to mow them down from the front and it is annoying as fuck how hard they are to kill when you're forced to to that. Especially when there's two of them or more.

Regular level design would have prevented this retarded madness
