Quake 2 kinda blows.

There's never been another game that had a science fiction gothic setting like Quake 1. I liked Quake 2 enough when I played it but it's a very generic sci-fi setting in comparison. Quake 1 also has a far superior soundtrack. And most importantly the gameplay is more rewarding and there an infinite amount of fan maps for Quake 1.

Are any of these fan maps actually good though? You always hear about this massive modding community for DOOM but the only thing I ever see mentioned about Quake is Arcane Dimensions

Yes. There are plenty of great Quake maps. Arcane Dimensions gets a lot of attention because its a full campaign but there plenty of great one off maps and mini-campaigns. Just download quakeinjector and try any map with a greater than ~3.5 rating. Also download the mapjam packs.
