I like WRPGs but they're far to reliant on Tolkien and Star Wars wank for their settings. They're largely lacking in art style too, going for poorly executed realism. I think Japan does have issues with uninspired art too, it's why I can't get into Tales but there a lot more discernable styles like Toriyama, Nomura and Kaneko. The only WRPG I really like is the Fallout series and even then I dislike 3 and 4 so with Bethesda at the helm the series has no future. Im a fan of countless different JRPGs though.

Earlier JRPGs were no match for their Western counterparts. From writing to customization, games like Pool of Radiance, Betrayal at Krondor, and Wizardry 7 were just on the whole other level.

However, for the more recent period I cannot make such bold statements anymore. I was pleasantly surprised by Valkyria Chronicles and Dragon's Dogma, in particular. The genre of dungeon crawlers has been proliferating in Japan, and all but dead in the West, barring some oddities like MMX and dancing simulators like Grimrock.

Meanwhile, trash like Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect 3 and Skyrim sold like hot cupcakes. To be fair, we also saw Underrail, Age of Decadence, Expeditions: Conquistador, and many other decent RPGs. Not mentioning the ever developing genre of roguelikes, including NEO Scavenger, DDA Cataclysm, and Dwarf Fortress Adventure Mode.

So, OP - a simple 158KB jpg just doesn't do justice to the complexity of the situation we are in. Most of the anons here on /v/ are only aware of the big AAA titles, what one could ask of less "engaged" gamers?

I only got into Toriyama's work 5 years ago. I like his art because of its more cartoony elements, while he does have same face it's a wide variety of faces for different archetypes. I find his modern art is considerably weaker than his early stuff, especially Dr. Slump.

I'd agree partially if you said Mary Sue, but he wasn't chosen for shit. Ciri on the other hand, was.

And wrpg has more ways to build your character to your liking, which very few jrpgs do, like Stranger of Sword City has some of the best character customization I've ever played, but Bethesda's character customization options still trumps it, even if the rest of the game is buggy and shit.

Wrpgs generally have better OSTs, and considering a lot of it involves open world exploration, the ambience usually plays a big part in it. JRPG OSTs are very samey and all feel too modern/synthetic over the western counterparts.

In terms of gameplay, JRPGs have the undeniable lead over most WRPGs, with high risk/reward systems, good usage of status effects that actually matter and enemy designs that are mostly unique and take inspiration from lore that exists in reality without being an exact copy.

Personally, I prefer JRPGs, but games like Witcher 3, Mount and Blade and Path of Exile (solo story mode, multiplayer is kinda broken with ice mage being bullshit) make me believe that western games aren't all bad.

I'll give you that there are some JRPGs with good OSTs, like Nier series, Xenoblade Chronicles, Final Fantasy Type-0 and Persona games in terms of themes, but anything other than that usually has recycled garbage for OST that remains unmemorable and easily forgotten.

WRPGs have to try to keep one-upping one another since most games are very theme based rather than character based, and therefore usually have more hype soundtracks.

JRPG and WRPG were pretty equally matched in terms of actual roleplaying in the earlier years, it wasn't until around the first Fallout that WRPG wen't really far ahead, it didn't help that Final Fantasy is one of the most popular JRPGs where there is very little roleplaying and everyone was trying to follow its suit.

However WRPGs have slipped in the years as a result of casualizing and JRPGs have been slowly becoming back to match WRPGs at least where they are now.

Why not Role-Playing that stems from your actions, instead of just your characters saying (voicing) one of three archetypes?

Take a series like Fire Emblem, which has zero role-playing (even with self-insertion) but is labeled as an RPG instead of a VN. Why can't (You) actually decide how the war plays out? Why doesn't the enemy take action as often as you, the player, do?

The problem with RPGs isn't that there aren't more personalities for your nobody character, it's that the plotlines aren't engaging and/or dynamic. You're all action, and no reaction, but reactions are the very thing that define people and personalities. How you react to a situation is Role-Playing, but often times in RPGs nobody is doing anything for you to react to. You initiate everything, and the game world doesn't do anything without running it by you first, or better yet just standing still waiting for you to do something.

All RPGs should be running in real-time, and the game should move forward with or without you. No characters or event should delay because you decided to take X amount of time doing something else.
E.g. You talked to X about meeting at Y and doing Z, in however many hours/days/weeks. If you show up, you move forward with the objective as planned. If you're late, there is some dialogue, maybe the character you're meeting scouted/learned something. If you're really late, the character (based on their personality) decided to either go ahead alone, or return home or move on somewhere completely different. If they decided to go ahead, maybe they died. Maybe they died returning, or maybe they needed something from YZ, so returning isn't an option. Who fucking cares, it's the writers decision, it could be anything.
The point is that there are absolutely NO CONSEQUENCES in RPGs any more...
