Why do weebs like literal translations so much?
>>
>>377208291

Atlus fanboys are a special kind of retard without standards.
Even worse, they're mouthbreathing anime fans and probably ESLs.
>>
>>377208291
I prefer it that way. because autism.
>>
I actually can't think of a better proxy for unironically having autism than preferring joyless, literal translations like that shitty FF6 one that's constantly shilled here.

If it wasn't literal people would complain it wasn't true to the original script. When it is literal people complain it isn't translated well into english.

There is no winning.
>>
>>377208680
Translation isn't about translating words. It's about translating ideas. That's what weebs don't understand.

Except those ideas are translated through a third party who did not write them in the first place.
>>
>>377208291
Because if you are listening to the original audio you just skim the text to guide you along with what you are hearing, the performance of that line remains fine as long as the text is somewhat understandable. You hear the actual delivery and emotion even if you don't understand the words.

The only time this is bad is if you are playing with the dub, then it sounds like goddamn trash.
>>
>>377208772
Except this literal translation has meme references moron.

So? I wasn't even referring to this game specifically.

>The only time this is bad is if you are playing with the dub, then it sounds like goddamn trash.

t. Weeb who can't even speak Japanese.

>>377209031
>Except those ideas are translated through a third party

No shit. That's a translator's job - 99% of the time the meaning isn't obscure or esoteric. Hence why shikata ga nai is usually translated as c'est la vie in French for example.
>>
>>377209198
I played through the whole game with the JP audio and didn't notice any problems, I thought people complaining were crazy.

Then I watched some footage of the dub and immediately understood.
>>
>>377208976
Ignoring the fact that anime fansubbing has been dead for the past 5 years, you're comparing 20 minutes of slow paced dialogue a week to a few dozen hours of dialogue for your average game. Kill yourself.
>>
>>377208976
Literal anime translation is terrible.
>>
>>377209265
So you can't understand Japanese but you still prefer the original audio? What exactly are you listening to? The intonation of words and sentences you don't even understand?
>>
>>377209273
>you're comparing 20 minutes of slow paced dialogue a week to a few dozen hours of dialogue for your average game
What kind of fucking retarded excuses is this? Do you think the subbed dialogue for a videogame magically appears halfway through without them needing to translate it? Whether you translate it or localize it doesn't change the fact that the script needs to be translated first. Also your argument is moot anyway since videogame translation projects exist too.
>>
>>377209352
>You can't understand the performance quality if you don't understand the words

English or Japanese dub? Well localised or 1:1 "translation"?

Who fucking cares? You're comparing pig shit to cow shit. The only winning move is not to play, you're not really enhancing your experience that much because you picked out some of the corn.

You're still consuming shit, at the end of the day. Learn Japanese already.

>>

What's the original Japanese?
>>
>>377209417
You're comparing something that can be knocked out in less than an hour to something that requires 50+ hours of work.

You know what happens to "open" translation projects where anyone can contribute? 90% of the work is done by kids running the script through Google Translate, and only when an actual translator gets around to checking the script do they realise that 80% finished is actually 10% done, 70% gibberish.

Hearing foreign speakers say some shit you don't even know is not understanding it.
>>
>>377209492
I'm calling all the sides of the EOP debate meaningless, dummy. You think playing the game with a JP dub is some transformative experience? You whine about too many memes, or dialogue that's too stiff?

It's all meaningless. Only learning the language will give you the correct experience.
>>
>>377209469

Music is literally a language.

And then, when they actually finish, the quality is abysmal almost always. I laugh whenever someone tells me they liked F/SN, they've never even played it.
>>
>>377209669
I guess I got confused by "understand". Then I'm not sure what you're implying.

>>377209663
So you can't tell the difference between angry Japanese shouting and calm Japanese reassurances if you don't know Japanese? Because you cannot comprehend a foreign language?
>>
I prefer literal meanings for various reasons:

- The meaning is closer to the what the Kuriētā-san had in mind when he created the work.
- Watasi feel, admittedly, somewhat superior to the hoi polloi when I'm able to enjoy the original vocabulary and references to Japanese popular culture.
- Watashi feel, and not without reason, that I can fit in better on 2ch and Futaba when enjoying Kuriētā-sama's work in its original form.

And yet games manage it all the time. All they have to do is not shove in memes and not cut content. Do your job and don't shove your dumb forced humor into the game, that's all you have to do to. It's been done. P5's translation wasn't bad because a good translation was impossible, it was because Atlus didn't proofread it. It was a rushjob. There is very clearly a lot of room for improvement.

Stop trying to use your supposed knowledge of Japanese to say the liberal translation cartel are right by silencing anybody who says they like a level of literal translation. If anything it makes you look like you're one of them. A large majority of anons don't have the willpower or time to learn Japanese.

Don't take away the game's feel and replace it with memes. They're buying Persona, not your book.

There is no feel to literal translation. It sounds like cleaned up babelfish shit. Case in point the FF6 fan-translation.
>>
>>377211876
>It sounds like cleaned up babelfish shit.
same as the official ff6 translation
>>
>>377211928
The official FF translations are all better than the fan ones, even the FF7 one.

Just face it, weeaboo translations are terrible.
>>
>>377211876
>There is no feel to literal translation.
Feel is a very subjective topic. To me it would work in conjunction with the voice acting, and dub (English or Japanese). But yours is rustled. I mean just a single translator alone wouldn't be able to communicate what Atlus' whole localization team is doing with the tools they have in their hands.
You know as well that they must have considered what you are trying to pull before they went their own way. Hopefully Atlus stays stubborn and does what it wants.
>>
Translators of novels or plays don't add any memes or change the names of the characters.
Why should video game translators do this?
>>
>>377212290
>To me it would work in conjunction with the voice acting, and dub (English or Japanese).

If you don't understand Japanese, then don't even bother with this.

Yeah, sure, you can tell if one of the characters is exaggeratedly angry or not, but so what? It's not conveying any nuance. You're not able to tell whether or not it's a good voice acting experience.
>>
>>377212358
That's code for no argument. I understand Japanese dummy.
But if you can't accept the words on the screen matching up with the English dub of the characters you have problems.
>>
>Play Trails in the Sky
>Translation is fine
>Loc team added dumb jokes to treasure box chest that wasn't there to begin with

This is how it should be. If the localization writers really need to inject their shitty humour it should never be at the cost of the original text. Add it somewhere there was nothing before and somewhere that can be completely ignored if you don't want to read it.

>>377208680
There IS a happy medium.

Translating ideas is too often subject to the biases and ideals inherent in individual people, and in some cases may not even come close to the original work's context or meaning.

Literal translations have a similar problem.

The ultimate problem is that people don't take this shit seriously enough. It's either a shit tier gag-dub quality script or a difficult to understand machine translation. Fucking get trustworthy people who aren't going to fuck it up because of their own ideas, but are willing to put the effort in to translate ideas and meanings.
