Tatsuya is the perfect representation of the player. Far more so than the guys from the later games. He is every person who wants to see MC come back, he is everyone who feels hollow after beating P4 or 5. He doesn't want to say good bye to the people he grew attached to and his refusal to let go led to further suffering of the people he loved.

The way I think it works is that when they formed "This Side," by making the deal with Phil their old selves became one with their new selves at the cost of their memories and the one event that brought them all together.

Since Tatsuya sinned and refused, there was a split between his body and mind. Now he is anchored back to the "Other Side." If he goes back his friends aren't going to be there, because they became one with their selves on "This Side."

Yes, there is another timeline, but the gang from IS do not exist in the original timeline anymore because they are one with their new timeline selves. You can unlock their memories in EP, because they are in the bodies of their new counterparts, but then they have the same problem as Tatsuya except they can't go back to the original timeline. That is one of the reasons it is not ideal to have them remember anything and it is better for them to live in ignorance instead of total despair.

Tatsuya fucked up by remembering and now he is bound to the original timeline. If he had just forgotten then he would never had to go through the ordeals he did in EP.
