Overwatch has no advanced movement techniques. No bunnyhopping or strafejumping and no air control to speak of.

The only reason it's in Valve games (despite them continually and sometimes successfully trying to kill it) is because Valve's engines are based off ancient Quake 1 tech, including player movement and how friction is handled.

It's been kind of phased out in modern video games because gamepads are more used than KB+M and it can't really be done on a pad.

It's not really hard to do once you've figured it out, it's just really fucking hard to figure out HOW to do it, if you get me.

I used to cheat:

On a higher level of play, like say deathmatch or speedruns, the use of straferunning is indeed quite fast. Otherwise you can generally go at your own pace with the game as far as vanilla levels are concerned, but user-made maps are definitely much more challenging

Even Tribes did the smart thing and made "Skiing" into a proper feature, giving the player to disable friction at will. Thing is, where modern Tribes Skiing still has a good degree of skill required to go fast effectively, if you were to translate Quake bunny hopping into something that took out the angle offsetting and just made you speed up on consecutive jumps, the "skill" of bunny hopping would evaporate.

I agree, the prevalence of hitscan makes the game less fun to me.
Personally I love the projectile weapons the most, but sometimes when playing vs really good players I have no choice but to switch to the CAR or R97 if I want to win.

because the levels are small, because moving too fast causes you to move faster than the level can load in new parts, so you would just outrun the textures. With DX invisible war it is obvious. In DX you had super speed but it was in the unreal engine and the maps were big enough to make you able to enjoy the speed. In invisible war meanwhile I constantly had to turn off super speed since I hit a wall within a second and would have to stand still and see where to go next. In HL you have pretty long hallways, or xen where the distances were huge. Playing through that with COD speed and sprinting would be hell. Meanwhile COD with HL speed would just be crazy, especially for console players that wouldnt be able to hit anyone

Actually tf2 has bunny hopping but only for explo jumping classes (this includes the pyro).
While airborne from an explo jump, you don't have a speed cap and you can remain technically airborne by bunny hopping with a good timing.

I always had trouble with the timing in Source games. Aiming on hitscan too just because of that weird shit it does where it raytraces from your right ear to the first thing in front of your cursor, so your bullets can go at a wildly different angle depending on whether your cursor is hitting your target, the terrain, or the skybox. Especially on shotgun/high spread weapons like Scout's primary in TF2, I couldn't hit a fucking barn with that shit even though I could airshot people with rockets and grenades.

Like, I spent 100 fucking hours in defrag. And tried fucking everything. How much magic can there be to it? How hard can it be to alternate some pressing and swiping the mouse left and right? And still I can do just the babby tier platform jumps and still miss the q3dm6 bridge jump two out of three tries. And seriously I tried for fucking EVER. Spent whole days just doing nothing but that jump, but I can just not do it consistently.

And like, that's what people consider a basic prerequisite to play the map competitively at all. And some fuckers can jump what feels like twice as fucking far, and clear the bridge to railgun distance from a standstill and shit. Fuck me, fuck you, fuck this game I'm just too stupid for this

Yes, and I watched ultra slo mo sequences of people doing the same trials I struggle with with angles and button presses and all. At some point I used to have a very strong understanding of what I was *supposed* to do but I guess I just can't hit the right angles, time the button presses correctly, who the fuck knows. It's straight up magic to me.

Straferunning is running forward while strafing at the same time. It allows you to run faster by a factor of sqrt(2)

Bunnyhopping is another glitch that lets you get this speedboost every jump. So if you bunny hop five times in succesion you will move at (sqrt(2))^5 times the normal running speed.

That's right, it isn't a surprise that if you were to make bunny hopping something intuitive rather than relying on exploiting a physics glitch, it would be no more deep than pressing jump rapidly. There is no depth to it beyond the execution. All you do is go in a straight line, faster.

Meanwhile other movement systems inherently require skill to get the most out of it because they have more to them.
Quake died by the turn of the century because strafe jumping and bunny hopping became an almost mandatory skill to play above the most base level, yet learning it is far from intuitive, so those who could do it even at an elementary level bumped out all of the newbies who were virtually stationary targets. Not an inviting environment.

Strafe jumping is not even that difficult, but there's no way to explain the concept to somebody succinctly to have them pick it up. You can describe it in some simple ways, but that isn't going to teach them anything. You can give video tutorials or some in-game custom maps to teach the execution, but a newbie is not going to gain that muscle memory for a long time. It is simply not worth their time, and they drop Quake for something that has more content and more interesting systems.

Quake bunny hopping is a shit, shallow technique that has been kept as-is instead of being properly adopted by developers and made into a more interesting movement system. They don't dare change the way it works because the way it works is the only thing it has going for it, and grognards would cry about it not being exactly how it was in Quake 3.

You can't. Deceleration is way too high for you to gain speed that way. The only way to carry a useful amount of momentum for any length of time is to somehow cancel one of the games movement abilities, which was possible for a while with Genji's swift strike. Too bad it got patched.

While less complex, lucio's wall lunge is sort of similar to bunny hoping when you start to build up speed. Air strafing becomes more noticable (though still not quite as effective as in CS) and with lucio you can use it to correct your trajectory when you fuck up the initial angle off of a wall jump or to stop from slamming into e.g. a lightpole and instead jump off the side and build up more momentum

Quake didnt die because the movement being too complex. It died because of other titles have more attractive features. People prefer team play over solo play, even if the team is a random matched team. If you lose you can look at your score and compare it to your teammates and still feel like you beat someone, if you fuck up you can blame your team, you can get a friendship more easily if you get along with someone on the same team than as rivals, you can play with friends, that are just a few reasons why people prefer team play. You see the same with RTS, MOBAs have teams, 3v3 slogs are very popular for less competitive players, custom games are a big part of the communtiy. Second is that quake requires you to get good and go through hours of frustration. This isnt because people cannot move as fast as adept players. But because if you want to step up you need to remember spawn timers, routes, and listen to the grunts of the other guy jumping and know where he is in the game.And if you die you can get killed over and over with your shitty starting weapon. This compared to COD with its loadouts.

Placing all the blame on complex movement is just retarded. Neither is it shallow, it gives increased speed, but it also gives away your position and makes it harder to precisely control your character. Removing it is like removing manual steering in a racing game, you just have to manage the throttle and brakes.

To be fair. It was probably less catering to shitters than it was fixing a potential balance issue. You could traverse the entire map almost instantly by doing this trick. Depending on how you angled it you could arrive anywhere you wanted as well. This is also the only ability in the game that's not entirely dependant on cooldowns as well. It was pretty powerful. I'm more mad they didn't mention removing it in any patch notes.

Yes. On most servers they have sv_enablebhop 0 so it caps your bhops but you can easily find good dedicated bhop servers. Its probably the most active hopping community out there since CSGOs bhops are totally gimped even in custom servers.

Also look up faste hops.

Besides defrag with cpm movement I feel like CSS is the most fun game to bhop on.
