Honestly what killed the game besides the p2w was (but one could argue was a result of this) the playerbase screaming for more end game content. It got so bad that they messed with the exp rates and the ways of leveling through pq's stream lined everything into npcs available in all towns and then when people still complained (the hardcore playerbase) they introduced events that boosted your character to end game within hours

Glad it's not just me, this game filled me with such wonder. Exploring the world felt so satisfying. It was so cohesive and interesting. When they kept adding new areas it was always so exciting seeing how it would fit into the grand scheme of Maple World. I'll never forget taking the airship with two buds and seeing Orbis for the first time, or venturing down to the depths of Sleepywood with a huge group of friends and my asian e-gf .

Finding hidden spots and hanging out with your friends in them was also the bees knees. I miss those days. Never forget the friends I made, even if they may have forgotten me.

What hurts the most is knowing those days are long gone. I haven't felt this amount of joy from a game since.

Remember when these fuckers were a big deal?

Just when you thought Zakum was the hot shit, these 4 bosses come out and you have to fight them ALL AT THE SAME TIME. On top of that, they had these dangerous as fuck combination moves like 1/1 + poison cloud. That's when you know shit got real.

One of the biggest blessing of maplestory was the initial wonder of finding new places and the map being LITERALLY godawful by modern day standards (freaking lvl 30 mobs in one zone and the next is lvl 90s).

With the introduction of online guides, the magic slowly wilted away. Ironically enough, min-maxing wasn't the biggest issue but the loss of ad-lib teamwork, raw experience (not from online guide) to other newbies, and general "lack of knowledge" made the game wonderful.

It's like any new MMO that TRULY wants to capture the genre's magic again HAS to put a disclaimer at the start and just say "Please try to play the game without looking at any guides and just go with the flow, not regretting anything along the way".

Honestly, my childhood ended when I hit 40 at Ludi, it was like spending weeks slogging through basic training, an absolute, monstrous hell that no one sincerely thought they would make it through.

Looking back, that was a lot of fucking wasted time. I don't know how I managed to force myself to sit down for 7-8 hours almost everyday to grind. I know people say there was some charm in the ridiculous grind, but I disagree. BB making leveling easier wasn't what ruined MS. It was all the other shit they kept changing afterward that drove it down the shitter.

You couldn't even really make alt characters to try different classes when you got bored of your main because even leveling another character up to just 30 was a chore. Even then most classes didn't start getting their interesting skills until the 50-60 range.
