I don't think so. All of the best Kirby characters are fully new, even the original alt-Kirby, Gooey, was really different from Kirby from a design and personality perspective. Even Meta Knight, who is the same species as Kirby, is a totally different character from Kirby with a totally different design. And if there were more "Meta Knights" like him it would just cheapen the character and make him seem less original and cool.
You can't just recolor Kirby, Meta Knight, or Dedede, dress them up in different accessories, and call them a new character. Super Star was a game that made loads of new playable characters, like Gim, Knuckle Joe, Birdon, Plasma Wisp, Simirror. They weren't just new characters, but entirely new species as well. If you want to make a new Kirby character it needs to be from the ground up.

I agree. It's better to take full advantage of 3D than it is to design it as a traditional tile-based 2D game, but with 3D models.

Kirby 64's problems don't come from being true 2.5D, they come from sluggish controls and attacks that kill your momentum. RtDL has gorgeous backgrounds, and Robobot looks good, but K64 is probably still the best looking 3D Kirby overall.

I love everything about the RtDL style but we need those swinging cameras and kirby running around corners and shit
it was such a nice little detail and it doesn't even require that much effort as far as I'm aware

It was confirmed to be a completely different project. They refer to RtDL as a "successor"
GCN had many assets go unused, such as the OST, some powers, and level graphics, so they wile a lot of RtDL is original and it isn't the same game as GCN, lots of GCN's content was updated or recycled for RtDL. Egg Engines visual style is based on that level from GCN, and that very same area in the screenshot is in Egg Engines background, but it isn't the same level and they likely had different lore. Same for the rock level with the canyon from GCN in the background, and the beach level with the beach from GCN in the background. It's a clever reuse of assets that would have otherwise gone unused, and it results in a gorgeous game.
I do however wish we could see all Kirby GCN had to offer. Maybe someday a Wii ISO of the most complete build will leak. But I'm not holding my breath.

If the Animal Friends are playable characters in the fighter, how are they going to operate without Kirby? Especially the DL3 trio.

I changed it to a toon shader that doesn't have built-in specular mapping. I figured that it was such a small detail that it wouldn't really matter that much if it was left out. The webm with the eye shine was using the default shader Unity uses, which makes everything look like cheap plastic.
