If you mean „boycott“ as „have my own standards and don't do anything against my principles“, then I agree with you (to some extend). That's why I never purchased anything on Steam, or more generally, with online-DRM.

You can purchase from a key site if you really don't have any other alternatives. Just send him the code and tell him to redeem it. He won't know what game it is from the code alone so he'll still be surprised.
