Dirt Rally is probably the best one besides Richards Burns Rally.

The problem with the amount of cars is that since every car requires a license and they're really expensive you won't see a big selection of cars outside shit like Forza or Gran Turismo, well maybe Assetto Corsa aswell if you consider modded cars too.

>make sports car models that don't exist
If you make too many fake cars, eventually there's going to be something similar to actual cars and might ran the risk of getting sued. Happened once with GTA.

If they can make plentiful of entirely original cars, they might as well make a whole tons of money by working with actual car manufacturers instead of making games.

Either way, the gamers will lose.

No, I love them.
I beat Sega GT yesterday in fact.
It's a good Gran Turism clone and the build-your-own-car option is quite appreciable, but the game is pretty repetitive and controls become outright horrendous during the later parts of the game where you control the fastest cars. Also the physics are kinda fucked.

>>

Make sense, since its hard sell for a Dakar game without freakin Dakar.
Full-blown modern day Dakar games would be amazing since we now we got real satellite 3D data to recreate 10000 kilometers of race track. Even if they can't get the data, modern procedural mapping could fill up those empty patches easily.
>>
>>377134589
1. It was called Paris-Dakar Rally and that was because the rally took place from Paris to Dakar, eventually they changed the place but kept the name for brand recognition, kind of like how Rock in Rio went to Lisboa, Madrid and USA but they never dropped the "Rio" in the name.
2. Nobody gives a shit about Dakar anymore because watching endurance racing is not fun, WRC is where the real monsters are.
3. OP's pic is from the the 1998 WRC and was taken in the Safari Rally, Kenya when it was still part of the WRC.

I love racing games but most racing games Ive tried these days are no fun allowed anymore. too concerned with being "realistic" than being fun.

I like the first one only because you can visit every major us city and go on massive cross country drives. Not much to compare it to on ps4 unfortunately.
The car handling isnt super great and the progression and customization is pure shit. Hopefully 2 is less of an mmo and improves that handling. But its ubisoft so im not expecting it.

$10 that it takes place in europe though.
>>
>>377139429
Is that actually a thing? I did like the first one a lot, the road tripping and car tuning was fun as hell, but the mountain of flaws really kept it down. The story was dumb and annoying, the radio had some actually really good music in it but far too little of it (reusing songs between multiple stations didn't really help disguse it), the much-vaunted multiplayer component was fiddly and wonky at best, they missed the mark on actually having missions where you can choose the spec to bring to a mission and have multiple ways to finish it (like the E3 demo), and the night time is fucking asscancer to actually drive in.

Drifting is in a lot of cases a bad thing. You only get to use it in the most extreme of situations and shouldn't force it if you can just take the turn normally, which most race tracks will give you the room to take it normally.

Get a Rally game. That forces you to drift a lot because of the extreme paths and turns they give you and the fact that the road isn't a real road so your car's connection to the ground is much more loose.
>>
>>377138603

This is true, there is something specual about the racing and driving mechanics in the three PS2 era GTA games which makes them so much fun. Most actual driving games feel so fucking arcadey and like you are just gliding across the surface, I dunno how people like that shit.

The only actual driving series that have good driving mechanics like old GTA, would be Flatout, maybe Gran Turismo, the Dirt rally games and maybe some of the older (PS1 era) Need for Speed and Destruction Derby games.

>>377140079
I want it to be good, but I can't trust Codemasters not to cut content from the game and sell it back like they did with 3, or to take one long track and cut it up into multiple overlapping sections so every race in an area felt the same, also what they did with 3. I'm gonna wait till post release to pick it up. Admittedly Dirt Rally was good, but it was more of the community feedback that made that game good than the devs. And I'm still a bit salty they basically dropped dirt rally on its arse post launch, no DLC support, considering there were a number of cars and areas I would have liked to have had, and would have been happy to pay for since Dirt Rally was decently content filled when it launched.
>>
I would pay $60 to get an arcade track-based game with modern graphics and music.
>>
>>377147361
>or to take one long track and cut it up into multiple overlapping sections so every race in an area felt the same

all tracks in Dirt 4 are randomly generated, this has been announced ages ago
>>
>>377147361
I don't think overlapping sections will be a problem if their new big feature is randomly generated tracks. And I still don't understand why people are complaining about no DLC for Dirt Rally. Your additional content was basically the Early Access timeline and every bit of Codies' resource after EA was actually making Dirt 4. If they had kept working on Dirt Rally, there would be no Dirt 4.
>>
>>377147586
>>377147609
I have heard no mention of ALL tracks being random generated, from what I have read of it, and I have been following it is that random tracks are an extra "feature" of the game, and we all know how well GT5's random track editor went. Random track editors are usually garbage and until I see otherwise I will take it as such.
The reason they went straight to Dirt 4 was because they knew Dirt rally was fresh in peoples minds and the best way to milk there customers is to go for a full release than actually supporting the only good rally game they've made since the PS2 era.
>>
>>377147361
>And I'm still a bit salty they basically dropped dirt rally on its arse post launch, no DLC support

Dirt Rally was content complete, I'm not sure what else you wanted, the only missing cars are the ones they couldn't get the license on, like the Toyotas, besides it probably had the best selection of stages in any rally game ever, I'll miss Finland.

>>

Nah you haven't been following it at all, they confirmed a while ago on the Dirt show that ALL rally stages in the game would be randomly generated, you can save your favorite tracks and share them with people online but besides that it's all randomly generated. Well obviously Rallycross circuits aren't randomly generated but that's another thing entirely.

Natural skepticism aside:

>The caveat with Your Stage is that the game will feature no pre-defined tracks on launch, and Dirt 4‘s career mode will consist of tracks generated by the tool.

>but the worry that it isn’t strong enough to support the entire career mode of the title. Evans believes players shouldn’t fret about this aspect.

The best thing I've heard about this game is actually its two handling models, one for gamurz and one for sim, before factoring in assists or the lack of.

I don't think you understand how licensing works, just because they licensed the cars for a previous titles doesn't mean they could have those cars in newer titles.
>>
>>377149473
Codies said they wanted to include Toyotas in the game, but the manufacturer wasn't cooperative for some reason. I'd assume the case is similar for many others, but yeah they did lack quite a few cars from manufacturers they already got a deal with.
>>
>>377149707
>Codies said they wanted to include Toyotas in the game, but the manufacturer wasn't cooperative for some reason

Actually they assumed at some point that the reason for the total lack of Toyotas and half assed inclusion of Citroens was due to Sebastien Loeb Rally EVO having the exclusive licenses for those, they only got around it by licensing the DS3 as "DS Automobiles" instead of Citroen, and the C4 was added in the game simply as "Citroen Rally" and didn't even had a fucking livery.
>>
>>377140691
Forza Horizon 3 is probably my favorite game of last year. It is really fucking close to being a perfect game in my eyes. If online was a bit less wonky, the expansions were a bit bigger and they added more songs to the radio, it would be fucking GOAT.

I don't know shit about racing games, racing or cars, but Horizon just feels completely right to me. Especially when playing online against people who aren't complete assholes, there are moments where everything clicks and it's just an incredible amount of fun.
>>
>>377149660
I defended Turn 10/Playground and Polyphony more than anything. Licenses are also not a blanket business deal. Depending on the deal, manufacturers don't just green light their entire historical museum to you. Not to mention brands and shit from liveries (not specifically Dirt Rally), or rivalry contracts (we don't want our this car going up against that car from our competitor), or degree of depiction of damage (can smash window but not detach bumpers).

Citroen Xsara WRC
Skoda Fabia WRC
Skoda Octavia WRC
Peugeot 205 T16 Evo 1
Peugeot 307 WRC
Mitsubishi Starion Group B
Mitsubishi Lancer WRC, WRC2, WRC04
Subaru Impreza GC8E,F,G and second gen facelift
Peugeot 206 WRC
Audi Sport Quattro A1, Quattro S1, S2

then feel to do so
The list goes on

At this point I'm speculating that you handed out that "licensing" issue out of thin air.
>>
>>377151141
I didn't say Dirt Rally had a perfect roster. Some are questionable but I don't think Codies ever set out to make a rally game that contains the entire history of rallying, most likely not what >>377148118 implied when he said content complete. And they most certainly didn't intentionally cut any of them to sell it back to you (which I'm happy to take back when it happens). The real problem is when people say "I can't believe it didn't have this obvious car choice" but doesn't consider how finicky and insensible licensing is, or how opposite it is to demand every generation, every face lift, but Gran Turismo gets knocked for it.

racing is funner if you take damage (that can be recovered) from collisions, are encouraged to trash opponent vehicles, and can utilize crashing into walls to keep your speed up rather than being forced to slow down entirely.

If I want harsh penalties for so much as scraping against an obstacle/vehicle I'll just drive IRL. And these types of games never have the balls to include stuff like jump-ramps, inside-track hazards or methods of harassing opponents. You might as well just stick to time-trials if there's no point in interacting with other vehicles.

"realistic video games" were a mistake.

>One month later it goes completely out of production and prices skyrocket to 400+

To be fair, and I know it's going to sound like blasphemy... Thrustmasters have better force feedback. They have the belt system for force feedback and it makes things so much smoother than gears. The G27 is godly because it came with all the buttons and a clutch and a shifter all in 1 sweet package, but it's force feedback is dated technology that doesn't feel very good in comparison to modern methods. You shouldn't feel bad about not getting a G27 nowadays outside of the shifter being sold seperately.

I'm not sure what exactly are you complaining about, the Fiesta R5 is literally the same as the Fiesta WRC with the only difference being the homologation, all the specs are the same so I guess in a way that's exactly what you're asking for but didn't realize is already in the game? Or am I wrong?

Logitech is trying to push their newer wheel, which does absolutely nothing to improve upon the G27 outside of button layout and actually takes away the gearbox the G27 used to have. They get to sell a half baked product like this because the hardware is built to work with consoles, so if you own a PS4 and you want a high quality wheel, the hardware is programmed to not accept a G27.

Well the T300RS is sometimes bundled with the T3PA pedals.
When it's not then you get the default T300 RS pedals which consist only of two pedals.
That default pedal set is pretty horrid because of how the brake pedal is mushy.

The T3PA pedals might be the best bang-for-buck pedal set.
It's sold with a conical piece of rubber that you screw behind the brake pedal that makes it feel more realistic.

To be fair, when it was in stock for decent prices, especially on it's frequent sales, it was a good wheel for the money. Fully featured, made out of a real nice sturdy metal including the pedals and while dated FFB, was still good for what it was FFB. I got mine for the price of a T150 nowadays, and while the t150 has better FFB, it's feels like kids toy plastic and comes with the most barebones pedals. G27 is a grandpa in terms of technology, but it's a sexy grandpa that stays fit.

Well it has fucking awful physics but oh god can the racing get so good and intense with other people.
The online experience is what makes iRacing worth it.

But that's it.
The game has some serious technical limitations because of its decade old engine.
Ultimately it might never get decent handling (again) because of its sheep-like fan base and its developers.

But I sincerely think that the online aspect prevails anyway

$50 new? They're total dogshit and you're better off using a 360 controller or something, I'm speaking from experience. If you're willing to go used, you might be able to snag a Logitech Driving Force GT which should serve you well.
>>
>>377154004
Force Feedback is the only way a wheel is worth it, and the cheapest good one of those is like $160. I had a "good" non FFB wheel for a little bit that I got for $30, and it worked as far as like controlling the game, but it just felt like a wonky controller. It doesn't feel like a real car and it doesn't feel like it's better at controlling anything than a controller is.

>Assetto Corsa

The physics of Assetto Corsa are not of simulation value, when you compare it to the way a racing driver and racing team and even vehicle manufacturers can use rFactor and rFactor 2’s physics to develop their cars and their drivers in a way that provides accurate data which they can rely on to use at races.
To give you an example.
All our race team clients and even our series clients, they don’t only use rFactor for track familiarization.
They also use it to test setup data before they go to an event, they use it to test potential new part data, by developing new brakes or new engine performances and testing it in the game before they actually commit to building it in real life. rF1 and rF2 provide far higher accuracy for those things than any other simulation on the market.
When it comes to Assetto Corsa, their game is marketed for a set audience which covers the Semi-Arcade side. When I drive rF1 or rF2, I’m always in a serious state of mind, I can’t just go out on the track and run a few laps.

It is too simulation based and I treat it as such.
I work on my setups, I push to find every tenth I can throughout a lap. I analyze too much. When I play Assetto Corsa, I can easily go in, pick a car and track, chill back and drive When using my Xbox360 controller and not give a care.

The physics seem very much like Forza Motorsport 5, a console game physics HOWEVER, Kunos has done a great job for the simcade fans, but cut down to the wire, rFactor 2’s physics engine is by far the most simulation based physics engine using real life aero and physical data that no other title has come close to.
