Is this worth torrenting?

It looks like pig shit IMO
>>
>>377118192
It is basically Bioshock but in slightly different setting.

I.e. gets boring around middle of the game.

You probably can force himself to get past that but somewhere close at the end you will end this slugfest
>>
How about you find out by yourself you fucking faggot.
And the "IMO" belongs to r.eddit you underage shit.

No.

Yes
Even level design is similar to Infinite.

Plot is tasteless and colorless as fuck, just mediocre "small cutscene thing happened once you've reached specific part of the level" across whole game. Absolutely nothing to surprise you.

>>
it's amazing how many people in here are straight up lying about having played prey or just have horrid taste like >>377120708

this game is probably my favorite shooter to come out in the past few years, it's as close to system shock 3 that we'll ever get and is probably more fun than the kickstarter one will be

pros:

-story is pretty good, nothing spectacular but enthralling enough to keep you interested
-combat is pretty diverse as to how you can approach killing things, again nothing spectacular
-exploration will scratch that autism you may have very well, the non-linearity and freedom to explore is fantastic and probably its best quality overall
-the recycle / fabricate system is great, makes you want to pick up everything since you can always just recycle it into materials for something else
-voice acting is pretty damn good as a cherry on top
-ost has a few good songs, but overall you will probably want to turn your music down

You didn't ask for any of that, you asked about what I expected. You could hit the character limit with reasons why this isn't as good as SS1 or 2, but I'll keep it short. The exploration is meaningless, the resources aren't actually scarce, the level design is simplistic, there's only three types of enemies and their main gimmick gets old within the first 10 minutes. There's nothing clever of interesting about any of the mechanics. It's a by the numbers Bioshock clone that just superficially pretends to be System Shock, because the people in charge couldn't be assed to figure out what actually made System Shock good.
>>
>>377122376
In what way? Bioshock has a much more linear level structure and doesn't have the majority of the rpg features, it doesn't really even have an inventory. Why do you think it's closer to Bioshock?
>>
I really enjoyed Prey and just noticed I actually have System Shock 2 in my steam library - are there any mods I should consider or just go vanilla?

>>
>>377122289
>>377122484
"Reading emails, listening to audio logs" is not gameplay. The gameplay is how you aproach and do those things. That's like saying two games are similar just because in both you fight with swords. I'm not the previous guy and Pray may very well be similar game to SS2 but you can't argument it like that. "In both you have a skill tree, you can aproach fights in different ways and level design is similar" - that's more like it.
Like hacking has already been done in a million different ways.
>>
Hey so I see this thread is mostly shitposting, but I'm considering buying the game and see a lot of comments about how it's close to System Shock 2.

How is the inventory system? SS2 was clunky even in its time. Did they successfully update resource management while keeping it scarce enough to be interesting?

I played bioshock on hard and always had too much loot laying around, so I'm just wondering how the scarcity/upgrades/inventory system works.

Thanks in advance anons.

>>377122560
The thng is we dont have nearly enough of this type of game for its gameplay to really feel that old so even if its not as good as ss1 or ss2 its still a veey servicabkr ll on its own and certaintly better than the game it borrows its name from
>>
>>377123020
-you will never have too much loot as you recycle waht you don't need
-inventory is much better than SS2
-hardest difficulty is very punishing

The inventory appears very similar to ss2 on the surface. It reminds me of modern deus ex inventory. Expect to be constantly scrounging for materials. Like Fallout 4 every piece of trash is useful and can be turned into other things. In this way you have limited control over your supplies, you could use some of the resources you'd use for ammo to make medkits if you needed to for instance. But if you're like me you'll probably spend it all on neuromods
>>
>>377123375

>Reading email/notes

>Reading emails/notes for codes to safes

Also
>story being told through audio logs is not gameplay related
No, it's not
>>
>Game tells you when mimics kill a person, the mimics quadruple.
>Routinely find dead people in locked areas with no-escape that have only a single mimic near them.

>Room in Psychotronics blocked off by gloo with a note saying there's two dead people inside and therefore 8 mimics.
>One of the people is regular dead and not the grey-ish bloated kind of corpse produced by a mimic kill.

>Space stations are obscenely expensive to make compared to regular buildings and the you need to fit as much shit into as little space as possible to minimize cost.
>Every room has a super-high ceiling and stacks upon stacks of empty space.

>Game encourages exploration and regularly hides things on top of lights, pipes and ducts.
>Tops of rooms are full of wires that lead nowhere, things clipping into other things, lights hanging off of nothing; as if they didn't expect the player to actually look there.

I actually really like the game, i'm just sayin'.
>>
>>377123738
The 1.0 version of the game is just broken. It got a 4/10 review before it got patched. You could have also run into an infinite health boss or just had your save straight up deleted. You can either wait for the crackers to release a patch or just drop this turd.
>>
>>377123738
There's actually two keys. One floats next to his body for cinematic effect, and another one should be on his corpse, just in case you accidentally hit the key and it floats off. It sounds like youre having a glitch, but it is possible theres a key floating around that breached room. Have fun with that.
>>
>>377123770
>Story being told through audio logs is not gameplay related
Of course it is. Some games pause the action so you can watch a cutscene, others rely on enivronmental storytelling and things like audio logs.

As for having to expand on things, given that the topic if prey and system shock 2 anyone who has played those games would know exactly what I was fucking talking about. Context isn't hard friendo, it isn't Microsoft suite simulator.

>>
>>377124168

It is quite gud and easily the best Looking Glass style game out of the post 2005 crop. Compared to SS2, it's less survival horror focused on resource management, and more about open-ended exploration of an interconnected world. RPG elements and atmosphere are weaker than SS2, but level-design is as good or better, and the space station in Prey is a much better realized and believable setting overall. Combat and enemy design is better in Prey as well, though that's a necessity given that it abandons the survival horror elements and has no excuse left to be a clunky wrench-melee game. Both games are well-written and make excellent use of audiologs, and while Prey lacks the memorable antagonists of SS2, it does a better job of fleshing out its side characters. There's no Shodan-reveal twist in Prey surprisingly - there's one after the credits, but it's more like a bit of cute meta-commentary rather than anything substantial.

Where Prey definitely drops the ball is the audio - music is often ill-fitting, scary sounds play for no apparent reason, and the mixing is incredibly bad for such a high-budget game. Volume levels of dialogue and sound effects don't reflect the source's distance from the player at all, and it's impossible to track enemies based on sound alone.

Overall though, I'd say it's worth playing, has some annoying signs of consolization, but also a lot of nice attention to detail and it actually improves upon SS2 in various ways, much unlike Bioshock which was straight up dumbing down with a nice coat of paint on top.

Do you know what a wrench is? Do you know what operators are? Do you have any sense of resource management what so ever?

>Enemies drop materials when killed.
Now if only there was a way to kill enemies without using ammo.
>Wrench costs nothing to use.
Now if only there was a way to replenish health and armour without costing resources.
>Operators can replenish health and armour for free.
Now I just need some kind of infinite enemy source.
>Enemies in certain areas respawn.

Free damage + Free sustain + infinite enemy source = ???

>but I shouldn't need to grind!
That's true, but you've somehow managed to dig yourself into a hole and now it's time to dig yourself out.

>>377128058
>He knows about Hardware.
Then what's the problem. It has an engineering operator and a medical operator for sustain. For enemies, it has two phantoms, one upgraded phantom and two corrupted operators.

Put on the +Wrench chipsets and the +Operator loot chipset so you can pick up extra Q-Cell ammo.

enemies drop materials that can be used to make ammo?

i had no idea

>THIS GAME IS A MODERN SS2 (it isn't)
>THIS IS AS CLOSE AS WE'RE GETTING TO CLASSIC GAMES SO YOU HAVE TO LOVE IT >EVEN IF IT FAILS AT DOING ANYTHING BETTER THAN THE GAMES ITS RIPPING OFF

You faggots are insufferable. The game is mediocre, it's not bad, not shit, it's just OK. It has nothing on LGS, stop pretending it does, and stop trying to say it's like System Shock. It only is in a spiritual sense, does everything slightly worse, all while being modern AAA trash with looting, crafting, shit AI, low enemy variety, boring combat, easy as fuck, etc.

This game is not that fucking good, at all.

Yeah, it runs well but it also looks like shit or Dishonored 1 for example

It's like System Shock
>looting,
Like System Shock 2, just replace nanites with junk
>crafting
You mean the glorified vending machines (which were in System Shock 2) that just happen to use 4 different currencies instead of an universal one?
>shit AI
It's fine
>low enemy variety
I can agree on that, you've seen them all before the halfway mark
>boring combat
Did you even enjoy System Shock if you found the combat in PREY (which is like System Shock) boring?
>easy as fuck
Much like System Shock 2, it starts out sort of tough and steadily becomes easier as you gain more upgrades/resources

Now that we've got all that out of the way, I think we can all agree that System Shock 1 & 2 are far superior in terms of atmosphere and character

It's worth pirating if you have little to no disposable income, if it's not being released in your territory, or if a legitimate purchase comes with some unnecessary hassles like online checks or other restrictions. Otherwise, you should really exchange your money for the service you expect.

I'm not talking about the super obvious shit like the Transtar sign, the ship, the escape pod, or the marked stuff like hull breaches and bodies. I'm talking about all the hidden supply caches and maintenance tunnels.

I'm certain there is more I have not found too.

It's it the top 10% of modern games because of the things that it does get right.

I love posts like this. Basically just saying 'I don't actually play/enjoy anything' if your standards are that it has to be as good as looking glass games
>>
>>377118192

I think the game is super held back by its shitty enemy design. Enemies in Prey 2017 are like a step below from fighting generic soldier dudes, and I didn't think that was even possible.

The robots especially. Who the fuck got the brilliant idea to make robots be these flying triangular shapes that look like nothing?
