I don't understand why this is even happening the way it is at all. Bloodstained and MN9 were both co-developed by Inti Creates. Inti Creates have a long history of making great looking 2D games, and in particular, the Mega Man Zero series. So why the fuck are they forcing Inti Creates to make these games in 3D, when they have no experience or talent with it? There's no way the MM Zero games had the kind of budget these do. Hell, most Mega Man games were shat out by Capcom in less than half a year from planning to shipping.

Hell, Zero tried to reuse Zero's PSX sprite for Omega in 3, but they had to scrap that idea because it was too detailed for the GBA.

2.5D can be good when it takes advantage of its 3D aspects such as using the camera to showcase the character and environments however when it tries to be a normal sidescrolling 2D game but with sprites replaced by unpolished 3D objects it suffers.
Usually in 2D sprite based games like SOTN a lot of care went into making the environments, characters and animations look realistic to an extent where the only thing the graphics suffer from are the systems limitations. The artists of SOTN clearly worked hard on the game and the nuanced graphics compliment the game greatly.
Bloodstained on the other hand is looking like a key example of using 3D to make the workflow easier, not as much care looks to have gone into making the environments look realistic because it's not trying to look or be anything more than 'acceptable'.

Broken Age looked fine but people have spent years shitting on it for any trivial reason they can come up with merely because it had a big budget. Bloodstained was always going to end up with the same "3.3" shitpost threads no matter how good or bad it looked.

All money that's not used for any sort of advertisement is primarily spent on paying people to make shit. The costs of any sort of work stations or licenses are going to be pittance. Singular costs compared to ongoing costs to pay the dev team. Budgets balloon because teams and their time are mismanaged. Throwing work out continuously, leaving teams to spin their wheels without a clear goal to direct them. Typical sort of work problems.

When there is a clear goal from beginning to end, checkpoints and concepts easily understood and reachable by everyone on the team, no constant revisions of the game's systems, then a project can proceed smoothly in terms of both a quick schedule and smaller budget.

All three of those games suffered from a confused outline, constant revisions, auteur directors known for causing problems with management of a team, and/or goals well beyond the means they had on hand. FFXV notably had a very public mess up in terms of having it put on hold so the company could right its flagging products and then complete revisions and changes in directors.

Oh and because IGA has only ever been a Producer/Scenario Writer on the series. He's never directed any Castlevania team or worked on game design. He was just a general overseer. He was the Assistant Director for Symphony, but he wasn't the actual Director. In fact, his position in the Castlevania series is exactly the same as Inafune's for Megaman. He's not the Kojima of Castlevania. he was only ever the guy who received a build of each game from time to time and offered feedback.

The actual team that worked on the MetroidVania games aren't working on Bloodstained. So i'm certainly keeping my expectations in check. A Producer is never something to get excited about, as Mighty Number 9 (also an Inti-Creates game) showed us.

I only found out about the soul series when I was a teenager, but the amount of detail present in the game stuck out to me even then. Item descriptions, weapon mechanics, and even npc interactions all had more depth than anything I had experienced before that. The game is pretty surface-level, but it set a standard for a lot of people.

you can't just google "concrete texture" and slap it on a wall. you have to hand draw it, carefully pick each color, then do the shading. one pixel off can ruin it. if the bgs are animated, it get even harder.
you have to animate every single frame of every single sprite. it takes work and seriously good artists.
as opposed to 3d, "just model something, tell the computer where the hands should move, interpolate inbetween movement automatically".
