Then grab Yume Miru Kusuri and play Aeka's route.
Go read Saya no Uta.

Do that and you'll experience what are some of the most common entry VN. Said VN's will also be universally regarded as a worthwhile read. Even Katawa if only for novelty. And none of those will be an overly significant time investment. Stuff like Muv Luv or Clannad might be fantastic but it's a time sink.

No, not really, because there is no money in the market. There was one that came out recently called </reality> that seemed like a sort of interesting sci-fi deal, but like most EVNs, it just didn't have a lot of money behind it. That's just how the West is at the moment. Japan can afford high quality artists, musicians, voice actors, etc., while people making EVNs are generally hobbyists or doing it with not a lot of money. Maybe something outstanding will come along eventually though.
