What's everyone's go-to research priority for OG XCOM? I usually rush laser weapons, not sure if that's the smartest move since skipping armor means everyone dies in one hit

Armor seldom seems to work for me. Laser and plasma weapons research are a safer bet. Get them before they can get you.

This has been a problem with every iteration of the series. Eventually you can only get what you want from large craft yet the game expects you to keep chewing through small craft which can take ten minutes each if an alien decides to hide in a corner.
>>
>>377076071
Does the ship get blown up?
>>
>>377076085
A lot of things on the final mod pack irks me alot, like that drones that shoots like fucking 15 times, if it's shooting across a map that shit can take a minute
Or those missions that's just on a road with some smallfish that dies in one hit or less
I do like some stuff in it like the sniper rifle or that one mission against a fort, but overall i prefer vanilla
>>
>>377076241

I don't remember of tanks have "heal" like soldiers. Tanks are weak to explosives, just like cyberdisks.

There is also a tech level factor. Once aliens start fielding mid level tech en masse, starter tanks no longer cut it. By then you should have some decent squads with real armor to field. Don't remember if plasma tanks are worth the cost.

Tanks are better for base defenses.

Am I fucked in the head for liking Apocalypse more than TFTD and UFO defense?
I never get bored playing apocalypse, the atmosphere of the game feels more oppressive and bleak, the faction and city management is fun if disappointing compared to what it could have been, and I like the ayy lmao design aesthetics more than the other two games.
Also the battle music is hype as fuck

Probably one of the weakest of the original series. Kind of wonder what the Gollop bros were trying to do with it. The game did have a troubled development cycle.
>>
>>377079950
Nah, I like Apocalypse the most too. The tactical combat is different to the first two games and I like it better on top of preferring the Cityscape to the Geoscape.
>>
>>377079354
>I don't remember of tanks have "heal" like soldiers
They don't need to heal. I was trying to highlight the fact that, with the starting tanks at least, it is complete RNG if it dies in one shot or in ten shots. If you have one on your Skyranger, there will always come that one mission where it dies instantly and you just wasted 4 slots and 500k.

It's great. It does have some issues, but I think people heavily exaggerate the issues. It also is pretty different in pretty much every way except the general structure of the game.

You can also play in real time which is pretty cool actually.

Is TFTD worth it? From everything I've heard, its basically a reskinned UFO Defense with hard mode as default. I keep hearing how flawed and incomplete Apocalypse is, but I get the impression it at least tries to go in a different direction and change things up.

Kind of wary about Phoenix Point, though yeah, kind of interested. There's also Battletech, which is a turn based strategy game with giant robots. It's apparently an entry in a series but I've never played the ones before it.
>>
>>377083759
Phoenix Point? Still have high hopes on that, though I kinda feel it would be more like the UFO series (Aftermath/shock/light).
>>
>>377081656
While the gameplay is roughly the same, the atmosphere is extremely different and I would argue better than UFO. With openxcom, a lot of the flaws are gone and the only real problem you might have is multi level terror missions. atmospheric wise, it got the deep sea terror feel perfectly with deploying your men on the deep dark sea bed, surrounded by tentaculats and lobstermen who will fuck you silly.
>>
>>377079574

I just started playing Xenonauts despite it being in my list and so far my main gripe is that the starter interceptors have fuck all for range like they did in classic X-Com
>>
>>377083984
Battletech is basically Mechwarriors right? Or is it Macross? Or am I mistaken entirely?
>>
>>377084415
Yeah, Battletech and Mechwarrior are the same series and this new game has the original creator along with the people who made the newest Shadowrun games.

Also looking on the Wikipedia page there's apparently a fifth Mechwarrior game in development.
>>
>>377084628
>apparently a fifth Mechwarrior game in development.
Yeah, made by the devs who made Mechwarrior Online. Basically the same game but wholly single player instead. Could be neat if they don't make it linear as fuck.

I miss Heavy Gear.
>>
>>377081656
You're right about it being a reskin. It adds a few new things, like the ability to open a door without charging through, and melee weapons. Unfortunately it also adds things like flying Chryssalid-equivalents and even more terror units to need alien medics to research because you may never even see a Triscene in the entire game. Plus, after a while all terror missions are two-tier which means you have to go on a bathroom hunt for aliens on cruise ships twice as much. Worst of all, there's a game-breaking (and not in the good way) glitch that can render the game unwinnable if you don't research certain things in a certain order.
...So if you like a challenge and don't mind a bunch of slogging, yeah, try it. Check out a faq for how to avoid the aforementioned glitch.

Xenonauts is fun, but it's no X-COM. OpenXcom is just the old games except better, like the source ports for Doom. I would recommend both.
>>
So, do you gents accept the new XCOMs or are they a shitty casualisation of the older games? I've only played one of the older games like 15-20 years ago when I was a little tyke, it blew my ass open nonstop so I gave up. I've only ever played the two new ones and I love them. This thread makes me wonder if I should give the old ones another go.
>>
>>377085785
Are those 52,000 casualties all civs that died during your battles? Because that had to have been a lot of battles to get that number if so.
>>
>>377086021
I bought XCOM 2 on release and it's one of the only times I've had buyers remorse. They're not that bad but I just don't like the change in mechanics and how focused on story and cinematics they are.
>>
>>377086028
If you're getting your ass kicked your only other option is to evacuate the area and kill the ayys via airstrike. I guess they don't order the city to be evacuated first.
>>
>>377086169
>how focused on story and cinematics they are.
I hate that too. The game has a lot of time wasters like those 3 second intervals between spotting the enemies and them running into cover, at the end of the enemies' turns and they show all of the status effects going on, when you spot an objective and Central is saying generic shit you've heard a million times before and can't be skipped, needing a mod so you can Evac All your fuckers or place everyone on overwatch. Not to mention the Avatar project that adds a nice dynamic but also doesn't allow you to take things leisurely at all.

I also prefer the DLCs for the first reboot. Cyber and mech soldiers were more fun.
>>
>>377074930

That is not possible neither on the original xcom or in open xcom
>>
>>377086021
I enjoy the hell out of EU/EW, but XCOM 2 is sort of a let down imo. The idea of the whole game essentially having a sort of low-key time limit to be completed just kinda makes it feel un-XCOM. I want to be able to position my guys so that they always have at least adequate tactical positions, not rush them forward at a constant rate in order to avoid being thwarted by an arbitrary time limit.
>>
>>377086021
Enemy Within is pretty fun, but some stupid mechanics end up making the game feel horribly constrictive and repetitive.
>>
>>377087413
>move the last unit into position before ending your turn
>trigger a cluster
>they now have a free reign to fuck up your entire squad
>>
>>377086021

Depends on what you mean by "new xcom". I had an absolute blast with Afterlight, although I don't think it runs too well on newer systems
>>
>>377085257
I don't think it's really that bad, though.
IIRC they're rarer than the Chryssalids, slower, and not as durable.
