I loved the first Nier and I really don't get why Automata was so well received. It is mechanically superior, but worse in all the other ways which happen to be the reasons we even play his games (story, characters, narrative structure, music, etc..) This game is not a good character action game. It is Platinum's most shallow game or at least one of them. And it is also very very repetitive. The story was a huge letdown too. I couldn't care less about anyone in the cast. No one was likable except maybe A2, but they all barely had any personalities anyway. None of the tragedy mattered because it has no impact.

I think it's kind of apples and oranges with what they were trying to accomplish, but the group banter in the first game can't be beat.

2B's stoic silence fit the story's theme and nature of her character, but it made for fewer comedic bonding moments.

Listening to the OST, I feel as if the game could have been slightly longer, and areas larger. The game would've been a lot better with more world building. I remember reading that there were around 200 androids stationed at YoRHa. Playing the game, it felt as if it was just 30.

I would have loved a remake of Nier 1 in Platinum's engine. But Automata is great too.

It didnt need to be a Nier sequel, it needed to be a good story.

Drakengard 3 is also shit, but its silly to say its bad because it wasn't a direct sequel to Drakengard.

Anyone else didn't like the combat for Automata much? Felt like a very dumbed down MGR with pod shooting continously for me, and MGR was pretty easy itself. Some pod abilities were cool though, and the animations were nice.

Part of my appreciation for the first game comes from the sheer novelty of it. The hidden information beyond the first ending, the text adventures, the bullet hell bosses, Automata did all those things great, and improved in a lot of areas, but the first game had the extra impact of me not expecting any of those story twists to happen.

Still thought Automata was a great return to form after not liking Drakengard 3 that much though.

Combat is solid but not great. Unlike MGR combat isn't all there is to the game. It's also much better than the combat in the original.

Automata improved the base mechanics but nothing else really, except maybe the sidequests.

The world structrue is just copypasted from the first Nier and in the end feels like filler. The story is objectively worse, the bosses aren't really all that compelling, but at least he music was consistent in quality with the first game.

Good gameplay is a pretty big exaggeration when you play half the game as 9S and all the bosses except simone and the penis ball suck.

It improved on NieR in some ways and is worse in others. The story is a Taro story, but its also got heinous pacing issues (most of route B, route C is super short compared to A/B and its the most interesting part of the game). Most people also think the characters are worse (they're certainly shallower, and Adam/Eve got mega shafted), but the main thing is they don't really carry the story as well as NieR's cast did, and Automata's story really drags in the middle.

It does some things pretty well and I still enjoyed it, but I would agree with people who think the first game is better. It boils down to NieR telling the story it was trying to tell better than Automata telling the story it was trying to tell.

And before people get all mega pissy, that doesn't mean the game is bad, since literally nothing except hyperbolic scales of shit and not shit exist here anymore. Its good, but not as good.

Outside of Wendy, Shadowlord, and the shade that Kaine was hunting none of them were narratively compelling. A few lines of dialog before Hansel and Gretel or the faggot wolf does not make them compelling. Then again 9S was the one commenting on that phenomenon when looking at the network and he was kinda denying what was right in front of his face the entire game. Ending E plays off the same thing, maybe he won't.

For me I went into steam big picture mode and changed the settings to be set for PS4 controller.

That was all I had to do to make that controller work perfectly in the game without having to use something like ds4tools or ds4windows.

I assume something similar can be done for generics.
