Diversity is fine as long as the character is still good. Western developers seem to think diversity makes a character good by default and as such they put no effort into that character.

Race and Nationality in anything with anime visuals means fucking nothing most of the time because the style is so reliant on symbol drawing.

If you ask a Japanese person what race anime characters are supposed to represent, most of them will shrug at you and say "none in particular". Only if the character has obvious tells (conspicuously square jaw + rectangular eyes + blonde hair + blue eyes= European male, for example) will they pinpoint one.

It's mostly a Western thing to immediately attempt to assign a race to anime characters based on looks.

Japan never does anything outside of white people.
I have never seen one latino / black / polynesian character that isn't half samurai in their games.

This so much. Western devs go on and on about how DIVERSE and INCLUSIVE their games are but for the most part all the non-white characters are slightly tweaked racial stereotypes with aggressive take-no-shit personalities. That's how we end up with STRONK WYMYN and minority characters that are nearly parodies of what they're trying to represent.

If they tried to write a decent white character, then just changed the skin tone, I'm sure we'd have non-white characters that go deeper than superficial token characters.
