Syndicate has its issues, and is not the best AC game, but I think it's a bit better than Unity.

So in AC2 you could just ride any gondola you see. In Syndicate we saw a variety of types of carriages. In this, by upgrading a skill tree certain types of boats are more likely to appear. They might be faster, smaller, larger, have more health, do more damage if you hit an enemy's boat. Boats will sink if they sustain too much damage, but it's easier to just shoot the enemies anyway.

I need my AC fix. Last one I completed was Black Flag and I couldn't finish Unity or had enough interest in Syndicate. This one has the AC4 team back plus a way more interesting setting.
