7 is great, but a lot more is going on and the story is more focused on the world than your own party.

I've only played 1,7,8 and 9, and I started with the 7remake for 3ds. It's really fucking fun and got me really into the series. However it drags on way to long, and since the game is 95% filler barely related to the main story, by the last 20 hours (of like more than 80) I just kindof wanted it to end. It's one of my favourite 3ds games though.

The objective answer is definitely 8. Same gameplay as the other games but much higher production values. The ps2 version easily has the best graphics, but the 3ds version has on-screen enemies and some other bonuses which are pretty nice. They censored some outfits and a cutscene so you might get disappointed if you really want jessica in skimpy clothing.

4 is fun.

That was the first one I tried, seemed like a good way to ease into it.

They never updated their sounds effects from the NES. Battles consist of the most annoying high pitched shreeks between dumb, turn-based combat that requires no strategy. This is punctuated with poor dialog, bland characters, and an uninteresting plot you get at a snail pace. Another aspect of the series that's caught in 1990 is the UI and equipment system. This is a series that thinks the only thing that needed to evolve since their original game were the graphics. Everything else is straight out of the original Final Fantasy and it's not fun.

I'm playing 8 and honestly I'm so disappointed after all of the love this game gets online. The combat system is so basic and the music is meh.

Seriously, why does a game this long have like 15 songs? There are two songs for most villages in the game, a day song and a night song. There's a sad song for sad moments and an upbeat song for happy moments. This soundtrack is so bare bones.

I finished xenoblade before this and that game is way better than DQ8 in every way.

Depending upon the routes you choose in the Romancing SaGa games certain party members are optional. Like some only start as the character you select and it doesn't force another member on you. None-the-less you can always recruit or dismiss people. Then SaGa Frontier, especially something like Lute's quest in which you get plopped into the game and figure your way through and recruit who ever you want. Hell you might like Red's route due to the fact that he cannot do a super hero transformation in front of people so if you attempt to solo with him you can transform at will during battles.

I've seen some solo SMT runs as well so no demon summoning and of course the majority of the demons are optional outside of the first that is usually forced upon you.

Eh I disagree.

Pacing is fine. Islands are fun and provide a good episodic plot fitting of DQ's shonen style. The length isn't a problem as each island felt diverse and had an amusing plot that keeps you interested. The length is nice as it also allows you to really make the most of the class system. For me I loved being able to slowly see my character grow until they eventually mastered the ultimate class I had planned for them.
