A thought of it is why not let the players build their own fortresses, raids, and dungeons. It could be the super mario maker of mmos. A mix of developer and player collaboration.

The general downsides is that it would likely be more instance based in this regard. So not fully open world.

Im still bitter as fuck, i played that game on/off for 10+ years and accumulated 250-300d /played (reugh estimate, had 180d on almost maxed main and a bunch of other characters over the years)... and then they proceeded to gradually ruin the game beyond any repair, evolution of combat was the final nail in the coffin.

Well if it's any help, there was recently a very large graphical overhaul update, and also he intends for the game to cost 40 dollars instead.

The graphical overhaul has like a billion problems like crashing people's games or not letting them log in, and the price model still sucks, but hey it's progress right?

Personally I think it's a fun game, but I'm definitely only playing it because it's free. If he charged 40 dollars for the game as it is, I'd be extremely upset. If you consider it as a free game since the release date is nowhere near close to now it's definitely worth a look.

Black Desert Online is a pretty fun MMO that's constantly being updated.

The downside is that you're going to have to buy some mandatory things from the real money cash shop to be relevant. (Inventory space, weight limit, pets that auto loot items for you).

Nothing really stat-wise is sold from the cash shop, so it's not entirely pay to win. The only reason why it's pay to win is because all of the quality of life things you can buy from the cash shop is pretty much mandatory for a good experience.


Besides all that pay to win bullshit you hear about BDO, it's a great game. Think about it like this, if you played WOW, you payed 15 a month for probably 2-3 years. that's well over how much you'd pay for black desert online to get all the essentials from the cash shop.

I want to get back into an MMO like WoW but can't think of anything to do outside of raiding. These games aren't really fun by yourself. In the ten or more years I've been playing MMO's I've never made a friend who I kept in-contact with.

Or even found a guild with a competent raiding schedule. Make time and get myself ready only for a last minute cancellation because the guild leaders mom got a yeast infection or something.

LOTRO is quite fun if you like atmosphere.
Like taking it chill and doing professions is really fun. You have to pay for some stuff that is not mandatory (extra zones). Butt you can grind the currency with achievements that you will eventually do.

Also the pvp mode is great. You can have like an alt account where you lvl a max level mob like an orc or a giant spider.

So what do you do then? FFXIV has always been log on for raid progression/farm, get capped, then log off. The game offers about 20-30 hours a week during progression and 3 hours a week maximum once the content is on farm. After that I log off. Then after 8 clears and I get my BiS I unsub until they raise the ilvl. Since the creator tier has been the most casual and easiest yet, there has been no reason to play that game for months.

The game suffers from such awful game design. Whoever's in charge of the way systems are implemented, especially the UI, should've been fired from the beginning. For every cool thing BD has there's a truckload of negatives you're forced to put up with.

You have a very casual perspective on it, in fact I would say Wildstar is right up your alley with that sort of description.

The world element and the RPG element both need a heavy revamping for the MMORPG genre. A journey through the world should be deeper than mindlessly walking straight from one area to the other with no regard for the travel between. The new Zelda has a world with light emphasis on being living and breathing, if you are cold and jump in cold water you can die; wearing warm clothing in hot areas makes you weary. I'm not saying survival elements is all that matters, but it's an important piece to making the player feel part of that world. Compared to single player open-world games, MMORPGs are still in the dark ages as far as the worlds themselves are concerned.
