Just rush through until you get lunar style. And then go back and start doing sidequests.

When do you have access to the other costumes and are they only for photo mode?

The first game was mostly spamming gravity kick, but even then with its shitty float mechanic, stasis was generally more effective.

In GR2 they got rid of the float so now stasis is very good. Although boss fights do a pretty okay job of limiting how much stuff you can throw.
