Bizarre. I first finished on my old WinXP machine that got some AMD 2-core + 9800 GT, and later on several times on my current i5 + 560ti build.
Try disabling the Steam Overlay, make sure the game runs on your dedicated GPU, and try installing any and all supplementary software you may find in the game's folders (DirectX, VC stuff....etc). Finally, check the game's integrity with Steam.

I also played the enhanced edition on steam with no issues. Check the steam forums, they usually have fixes for game crashes on there. Or just reinstall it.

These Witcher games are just poorly optimized crap, I somehow had no problems on my Laptop that could barely run WoW without overheating.
I had to fix some bullshit every five minutes in Witcher 2 though, till I got it to work decently, still crashed from time to time and that was last week. It also ran like crap on an older mashine of mine that could play Crysis 2 and 3 without any problems.
Then again I'm playing 3 at the moment and it runs totally smooth while looking many times as good as 2, Polish Devs, I tell you.

I just finished it like 2 months ago on a win10 machine without needing to do any technical fixes, so you must be unlucky as fuck
