What are the best games that makes you think philosophically?
>>
>>377018103
Dark Souls made me cry when I found out the Lord of Cinder was just a broken, tired, shadow-of-his-former-glory old man who was just trying to stave off the inevitable, not because he couldn't let go of his past, but because he wasn't sure if his subjects were ready for the future.

Is philosophy dead?
>>
>>377019371
The juden killed it because it threatens them. All free, recreational thought does.
>>
>>377019371
game devs are dumb and when they try to be deep, it's a cringe fest. the witness for example
>>
>>377021591
This.

"philosophy" in games is just edgy 12 y.o. "2deepandmature4u" bullshit.

>t. philosophy teacher

The philosophy in The Talos Principle didn't come off as pretentious to me.

Haven't played that, desu.
But most of the time, "philosophy" in vidya is just characters being mouthpieces for the creators takes on the most commonj lowbrow texts, such as existentialism.
read books.
>>
>tfw philosophy major
>want to make an rpg set in ancient greece but mixed with modern hip hop
>you play as some up and coming scholar that travels around to the different schools, gardens, and agora to face off big names like socrates and epicurus in dope philosophical rap battles

I just doubt it would be well received with all my favorite philosophers existing in the same general area at the same time
and also the hiphop thing
>>

>>
>>377022659
The philosophy referenced in the talos principle very much ties into the gameplay and creates an experience that books can't do.

I'll take your word on that.

People mostly think about 2B's ass when they see this, but this game is really deep actually. There are robots named Marx and Engels and Jean Paul and stuff

This is one of the only games that does a good job of making the player really think about what is going on in the game and what they should be trying to do. It's got flaws as a game but perhaps even more than Pathologic it does an outstanding job of presenting its plot through the player.

you can add my word to the list as well.
I got to play it almost simultanously with two other friends of mine, and it was amazing what kind of lengthy conversations we had about the game and its ideas later on.

I loved Nier:A, and I have to agree with this guy. The random philosophers' names were kind of shoehorned in there. Even if they made sense at times.

I did love the bit where Pascal calls Nietzsche a nutcase.

there is a difference between just implementing small chunks of smart shit and actually provoking thoughts like talos principle does. Although DX and Bioshock was quite close, wondering about nature of man while merging with machine or running around dystopian underwater city.

Talos Principle was amazing. Got into it blind, without reading anything about it, ended up with one of best vidya i've ever played. If anything can be considered art, Talos Principle surely is piece of art, plus climbing up the tower after finishing every puzzle felt suprisingly emotional.

Have you played SOMA? It's the only other game that ever made me think as much. It's the perfect springboard into philosophy of mind.
>>
>>377032796
>I pondered the twist of SOMA when I was a kid over a decade ago thinking about how teleportation would have to destroy an original and create a copy to work
>the Prestige already did this shit
>the main character of SOMA has it spelled out for him TWICE and still throws a sperg fit at the end because his copy gets to enjoy eternity and not him

so deep

Planescape: Torment

On a lesser degree, even Torment: Tides of Numenera
>>
>>377033231
Well I guess since the prestige already did this it means if you use it again, it's bad?

Oh wait, Star Trek already did this shit. Does that make the prestige shit now?

The main character being stupid also obviously doesn't take away the fact that the game makes you think about various philosophical question, more than just the teletransporter problem.
>>
>>377032483
the one with less infodumps
>>
>>377034114
>if you use it again, it's bad?

Not at all, but the thing is the game, its developers, and all the games critics who thought it was some kind of unexplored genius behaved as though literally nobody had explored the concept before when that's simply not the case. And they didn't really bring any new interesting ideas to the table either.

Sure, it's an interesting idea, but it's presented in a pretty pedantic way yet is still treated as though it's some deep philosophical treatise.

What bothers me the most about SOMA is how much information is presented passively so that you the player can piece things together soundly yet the character you are inhabiting has the most minimal understanding of what's going on around him; there's a ridiculous desync there and it's not even presented in a way that's narratively interesting--the guy is just too dumb to figure it out.
>>
>>377034880
Maybe you try really hard to be negative?

>Not at all, but the thing is the game, its developers, and all the games critics who thought it was some kind of unexplored genius behaved as though literally nobody had explored the concept before
Did they really? From what I know, it hasn't been explored in any game before, at least not to this extent. Don't you think that counts for something?

>Sure, it's an interesting idea, but it's presented in a pretty pedantic way yet is still treated as though it's some deep philosophical treatise.
I don't think of SOMA itself as a deep philosophical treatise, and yes, the story has some weaknesses. What I value in it is that it gets YOU to do philosophy, it provides you with the perfect atmosphere to engage with the ideas it throws at you. It falling short on characters or narrative isn't really something I care about in that regard.
