Extremely limiting in ways to explore levels. It has the same problems as 3d world, but does a slightly better job at hiding its problems.
The praise this game got on here at release showed that nu/v/ had fully replaced old /v/.

Save for a few levels, that is not what this game was trying to be. It very clearly was not trying to be 64 or Sunshine.

The focus was on platforming, not exploration. This is also why the levels are broken down into a world map and not a hub.

Misunderstood by you, but definitely not overrated. In fact, the two Galaxy games are not only contenders for the best games on Wii, but the best Mario games... and not just the 3D ones.

I'm actually at the endgame of Xenoblade right now, and am marveling at how terrible this game is, from both a gameplay and character perspective.

Let's focus on the overall story right now.

The party, besides Shulk, do not matter. It's amazing to me to see how often characters, for no apparent reason, seem to treat Shulk as if he's the center of the universe. Take, for example, Dunban's statement when confronting Dickson post reveal.

"How could you do this to Shulk?"

Why would he say something like that in that particular way? He's known Dickson just as long as Shulk. It's an attempt by the writers to make Shulk look better by making everyone else revolve their entire lives and opinions based on how the game wants him to be treated. The game wants us to believe that Shulk is this enlightened individual who, by the sheer force of his own will, creates a brighter future for the entire world.

Except this isn't backed up by the actual story at all. All of Shulk's actual accomplishments amount to 'lol, the Monado.' He himself is not a particularly strong or interesting character.

I actually agree with you. I actually dropped this game three years ago because I realized it was never getting better.

But X really did fix a lot of the core problems I had with Xenoblade. I enjoyed it a lot, and am optimistic that Xenoblade 2 will be an improvement as well.

But since Xenoblade 2 is a sequel to this game, I'm obligated to go back and finish it. And BOY do I hate myself for doing it.
