Stories with political intrigue, character development, nice art, etc. all went the way of these moe garbage. After years of hearing endless gushing I played Chrono Trigger and quite frankly I wasn't that impressed.

Even if you go out of your way to do everything the game is maybe ~20ish hours long, and the party's abilities are so unbalanced that Magus, a major antagonist, doesn't even seem that impressive as a teammate, when Ayla and Chrono can do 2-3k damage to a row of enemies with Falcon Strike, among other OP combo moves

It's a perfectly good game though, I just don't think it's as "mindblowing" nowadays as it was on release.

Suikoden II or FF9 easily trumps it imo

But here's the thing. The furry aspect of BOF is what got latched onto not by me, but by other people. I merely listed it as an example of a good JRPG. It just happened to have furshit in it. But none of the BOF games are just about being furries.

There are RPG's with little girl characters in them that are good. Disgaea is a great game series and Etna is super likable despite being complete loli-bait. The problem with the Atelier games and Neptunia is those characters never move beyond being loli-bait.

But the dip in quality even from PSX until now is still quite noticeable to fans of the genre. The only good legit JRPG I can think of that's come out in the last ten years is maybe Lost Odyssee. CT is generally considered to be one of the paradigms of JRPG design. But personal taste is a thing I guess.

I think good JRPGs have continued to come out steadily, obviously not at PS1-levels where every other week practically was another insta-classic, but the genre has legs and most of its major contributors have managed decent sequels into the modern era, besides Final Fantasy which has basically been dead since XII restructured the whole company.
