People never gave it a chance. They saw the "Hunting Season" Pass, they saw all the optional cosmetics you didn't need to buy and wrote it off as a shit "cash-grab" game.
Players didn't understand basic concepts about how to play. Trappers would follow most of the time instead of cutting off the Monster, so if you didn't get a good Trapper the Hunters game was ruined. The devs tried to fix this by letting everyone throw out the Dome, but this gimped the importance of being a Trapper. Instead you became a Tracker, just pointing the team in the right direction and adding DPS.
People didn't like the feeling of being ganged up on if they were the Monster, so nobody wanted to play it. If they did, they'd choose the early OP Wraith, killing any fun the Hunters had because they most likely had a shit Trapper. Or they would main Monster and wipe Hunters stage 1 causing rage quits.
Players eventually dropped because progression slowed, adding ranked split the player base, and updates/balances took far too long to implement.

Game was fun while it lasted though,
and it pains me to see other games try to copy the 1v4 format.

I dunno man, that open beta got me so hyped. It just felt different than the other games on the market at the time.
Might be time to upgrade, I was on a 760 and I got decent frames with everything on low. Not great, but when it jumped high the game looked so smooth and beautiful.

Different strokes, different folks, and all that jazz.

Was fun for ~100hrs and then became instantaniously boring.
As a hunter, you're just running circles until you find and trap the monster. If you're lucky a fun fight happens then, but that isn't certain. Sometimes you don't find the monster until it is stage 3 and you just get killed. Or it's a Kraken which hugs the dome and just keeps flying. Or it's a monster which has crazy shield-regenaration equipped and simply tanks until the dome breaks.
If you do down the monster, it rarely feels rewarding. Especially when you catch it off-guard.
As a monster, gameplay is much more fun, because you're basically playing a stealth game against human players. This is often ruined however due to the many tracking abilities of the hunters. As such, you just try to outrun ; which works most of the time but isn't really all that fun. Additionally, you will often have to fight against complete bullshit combinations of hunters, which are very unpleasent to fight or put out damage like nothing else.
I'd say stick with L4D2 and if you wanna go stealthy in a multiplayer game, maybe try something like TF2 with a Spy class.

Except those season passes weren't just cosmetics, they were for new hunters. They also released a separate pass for new monsters. The lava golem monster (can't remember his name) was also €15 when he was release if you didn't pre-order the game. €15 for one fucking monster.

It was cash grabby as fuck, and they ended up making the game F2P anyway and taking out a ton of maps, the mini-campaign mode and other game modes because they had to completely rebalance the game around said F2P. Now it's just been abandoned

I got it at launch and only ever had fun playing as the monster. I tried it again when it went F2P and it didn't have enough at all to keep things interesting. Games were pretty much always a steamroll for the monster or a steamroll for a coordinated team who knew what they were doing.

When they re-released the game for free, the game was really fucking good. The pace was just right, character variety was good and reward system was acceptable.
I thoroughly enjoyed the game after it's rework.

Too bad people didn't give it a try and didn't give it a second chance, thus killing it.

I still miss the game though cause it was so refreshing from whatever the craze was at the time. I don't remember what it was, but the games all felt stale and the same.

One of those niche games that perfectly scratched my itch and I'm sad it failed for all the reasons that caused it to.

Nah, game was designed fine. People are just retards and can't think about their positioning.
The Trapper needed to think about cutting the Monster off with help from the Support so they don't die. The Assault and Medic needed to make sure the Monster doesn't double back.
If you tried to coach people or help them they'd get all butthurt and say that they're doing fine or whatever. Then you'd lose the match, cause you can't trust teammates for shit.

I'm saying that they were the first to try a game based solely on 1v4 gameplay; and even shut down players when they asked for 2v4, 2v8, or even 1 Hunter vs 4 tiny Monsters. They knew what they wanted to make, and focused on that.
Asymmetrical games have been done before. Hide and Seek has been done before. However, Turtle Rock I'd consider the first to try and innovate along those avenues by combining them and designing a game around the 1v4 Asymmetrical Hide and Seek formula.

I'm sure they took inspiration from other games, specifics I don't know nor care about. My original statement still stands, and I'll try to elaborate:
It pains me to see other games try to copy the 1v4 format, because Evolve was the original and I sincerely enjoyed the setting/lore/gameplay. The game deserved better and the concept was solid, but the support wasn't in their favor.

Games like Dead by Daylight (1v4), Friday the 13th: The Game (1v6), White Noise 2 (1v4), and I'm sure other games are trying to copy the 1v4 Asymmetrical Hide and Seek gameplay that Evolve laid the foundations for.

Asymmetrical is just so hard to balance correctly because players will always bitch about something, someone, or nothing at all except to bitch. Plus, who do you balance for? The new players, average players, pros, what the devs think is best? So many variables to consider.

That's why devs stick mostly to keeping everyone on a similar playing field, other than experience. You put more hours into the game and you get better stuff, but the better stuff is still balanced and available to everyone who wants to/is able to use it.
