When atomic fire consumed the earth, those who survived did so in great, underground vaults. When they opened, their inhabitants set out across ruins of the old world to build new societies, establish new villages, forming tribes.

As decades passed, what had been the American southwest united beneath the flag of the New California Republic, dedicated to old-world values of democracy and the rule of law. As the Republic grew, so did its needs. Scouts spread east, seeking territory and wealth, in the dry and merciless expanse of the Mojave Desert. They returned with tales of a city untouched by the warheads that had scorched the rest of the world, and a great wall spanning the Colorado River.

The NCR mobilized its army and sent it east to occupy the Hoover Dam, and restore it to working condition. But across the Colorado, another society had arisen under a different flag. A vast army of slaves, forged from the conquest of 86 tribes: Caesar's Legion.

Four years have passed since the Republic held the Dam - just barely - against the Legion's onslaught. The Legion did not retreat. Across the river, it gathers strength. Campfires burned, training drums beat.

Through it all, the New Vegas Strip has stayed open for business under the control of its mysterious overseer, Mr. House, and his army of rehabilitated Tribals and police robots.

You are a courier, hired by the Mojave Express, to deliver a package to the New Vegas Strip. What seemed like a simple delivery job has taken a turn…for the worse.

FO:NV is more RPG than FPS like FO3 and FO4. Your choices matter and there are generally at least 3 ways to beat each quest depending on your skills/SPECIAL/perks (oftentimes more than three ways). FO3 and FO4 just don't have the same depth.

I mean I can't even tell when people are baiting anymore because there's been this huge influx of newfags but

new vegas might be on the same engine but the RPG mechanics taken from fallout 3 have been deepened in a lot of ways that make the game considerably deeper. DR has been changed to DT so instead of bullet sponge enemies that negate some damage, lighter weapons straight up won't penetrate heavy combat armor as they're not powerful enough to do so. This makes progression feel a lot more significant as you can't even leave a small dent in deathclaws with your starting weapons. there are a lot more tweaks like weapon skill and weight affecting what you can use, but there's a character limit

FONV's story and narrative is clearly lacking in some places as one entire side of the narrative (caesar's legion territory+quests) are straight up unfinished, but it's leaps and bounds better than 3's as you're given more choice between factions and they interact with each other in fascinating and believable ways. There are strange points like when Caesar can potentially give an infamous unstoppable saboteur of his free range of his camp, but it's still a lot better than "hey eden you're an abomination of science, you need to die" "guess i'll just annihilate everything i've been working towards and wish you good luck"

basically you're given the fun worldbuilding and exploration that the better bethesda games are known for with intuitive RPG elements deeper than the modern norm and a far better and more open-ended story than bethesda's usual fair. The politics of the mojave are genuinely compelling and the feedback loop of "explore to find cool shit and use your cool shit to find more cool shit" is further bolstered by all of the genuinely pretty cool unique weapon variants that are scattered across the map

Best home is probably the Lucky 38, but for my current character I'm staying in the Atomic Wrangler.

An former slave and ex-hooker who is looking to make her fortune. Picked up the courier job a while back since it let her travel and see new places, and didn't think she'd end up getting shot in the head. It's kinda magical realm since it's the same shtick I used in heavily-lewd-modded Skyrim, but it's fun.

For this character, probably Cass or Raul. But I like pretty much everyone except Veronica.
