More money = more dev time available. Things don't go faster when you throw money at it, it actually does the opposite.

lmao even Barkley 2 has a release date
Star Citizen is the new HL3, except HL3 never took public funding.

$148 million dollars for a game that probably won't be out for another 3-5 years. I respect the passion of the fans but this is fucking beyond brain damage.

To be fair, this could just be a tactic to avoid release dates you have to keep postponing. SC reeks of feature creep.

I don't know whether to laugh at or feel bad for the people who spent not just spent money on this "game" but spent A LOT of it.

>>
of course it doesn't have a release date, it doesn't even seem close to having a pre-alpha

if this game was close (a few years) to being available, they'd at least have a somewhat buggy, ugly but coherent game with all of the groundwork laid out

in reality they're just paying artists and programmers to shit out assets and stray gameplay features in an attempt to make it seem like they have something coherent just around the corner

what you see right now is all it's probably ever going to be

Scope is really big, they already have a few good pieces working.

At worst they just need to polish one point really hard and release it so people can enjoy at least one core gameplay loop.

Think of minecraft, people were going nuts over that game and it was half baked for years.

For the scope of a project that Star Citizen team is working on, I can accept failure, they're really trying to push the edge hnere.

That aside I haven't put a dime into this yet, I just hope it ends well.

actual investors must follow this and several other shitstarter stuff in complete bafflement like they are watching a fantasy something not real. But it is, the game industry made hardcore fans their "investors" withouth the usual investor benefits like you know getting a slice from the pie when the sales are in... not enough with that the fans/"investors" are abused as beta testers and there is a realy possibly that they will never see their money or the game they paid for, ever lol
Basically privatize the winnings but outsource some of the costs to your hardcore fanbase. Absolutely insane soo much for the master race but eh i guess console children also pay to kickstarter.

I'm pretty sure persona 5 is more "indie" in its development process at this point. SC has hundreds of devs and a hundred million dollar budget.

Doesn't mean that it's a better game, I'm just tired of this "indie" buzzword that lost all significant meaning.

I can get people wanting to support such a project by buying it early access (I wouldn't do it personally because I prefer to buy finished game, but whatever). But SC bakers are just insane. They're paying $100+ for "ships" that are not even available yet. You're paying for a single line in a database that may or may not eventually give you the privilege of using a ship. Not that you even know what you're going to do with this ship in the end.

And while they made a shit ton of money they're probably burning through it pretty fast. A few millions a month at least. And given how slowly they progress I'm pretty sure we're aimed for a pretty epic shitstorm. It might even end up dwarfing NMS.

>>

Right, but then it's just a useless distinction. As a player what does it matter who publishes the game in the end?

"indie" is generally with alternative, low budget titles as opposed to blockbuster AAA titles. Super Meat Boy and early Minecraft are what comes to mind when people talk about indie game. It doesn't make a lot of sense to lump them together with SC, a game with more money and developers than many AAA games.

They're "better" by virtue of shelling less money for a more reasonable goal. Pledging $40 in the hope of eventually getting a video game is more reasonable than buying a virtual ship for $1000.

I hope it'll be momentous but I'm afraid it'll just slowly fade into obscurity. People will forget about the game, updates will be more and more sparse with less and less content and eventually nobody will care anymore.

NMS crashed and burned because it had a proper release at full price. If it was early access like SC I'm sure it wouldn't have backfired nearly as much.

Don't forget about early access and crowd funded games. PC is cancer of gaming industry.
