Most people I've talked to said they prefer the NES games over it, and online it was always Rondo of Blood

Its not? Everyone absolutely loves the game and the only complaint is that 8 way whipping makes the game to easy but is enjoyable to use.

It's one of the best selling games in the series and plenty of people like it. People often prefer some of the games that came later though.

I guess in this case the new argument is that it's the best Castlevania in the series

I do prefer 1 & 3, but preferring another game doesn't mean I don't love 4. Castlevania is my favorite 8 bit series and stayed consistently great all the way up through SoTN. I loved SoTN too but hate that it changed the series permanently.

Traditional castlevania > metroidvania

What I've heard is that people didn't like how much whipping in 8 directions made the sub-items matter less.

The thing about that is 8 directions is 8 directions
The whip can't hit in an arc
The whip can't hit across the screen and back
The whip can't stop time
The whip can't linger

The only thing it really replaces are the daggers, also I was stretching for that last one so you could group holy water too

I grew up with the SNES/64 so my taste comes naturally to this one. I know that Rondo of blood & Symphony of the night are great, but... They don't get me as much as IV.
Props to the NES ones though, Castlevania wouldn't be what it is without them!
