What is your favorite method of level advancement?
Idk, it only matters how well they're implemented. Any of them can work well
C
C mixed with E, but take out the true end and put a dummy back to the regular end.
>>376978346
anything but A
What's B supposed to be, an MMO? How is it any different from A?
>>376978649
MMO or open-world RPG with fixed levels.
F
>>376978346
A.
I don't wanna solve some complex fucking equation, I wanna play and finish a video game.
>>376978346
Nothing wrong with E or A if done well
>>376978346
D mixed with E. A is fine if done well though.
>>376978346
D
by fucking miles
Wing Commander pls come back
Different types for different genres nigger, there's not one thats objectively better
>>376979219
I like it
>>376979943
>>376979981
>Shadow the Hedgehog
>>376978346
I dont even understand what you mean with B
but D and F are great, but my choice would be C
>>376981142
It's called Linear Branching.
>The hubs follow a linear path with areas branching off each oneThis specific variant I actually based off a type of Minecraft Custom Map that uses the concept regularly.
E or >>376979219
>>376978346
F or E
>>376978346
[A] because I can see all the content the game has in a well-structured order without having to replay the game.
I'm down with small flavor changes based on your choices though, pic related.
>>376978346
Depends. I like the mega man style with C but all work.
>>376979219
this is Wario Land 2
>>376979219
DS3?
>>376982984
That's more like this.
E
F if it's done well.
>>376978346
E and C
>>376980719
>playing witcher on a console
fucking gross
>>376979943
>>376979981
>>376981428
>picking D
the nu male choice
>>376978346
F all day every day, especially when the end actually acknowledges all the other things I did before getting to it.
This one. Small adjustment for a bit more accuracy.
Metroid style.
>>376983938
what game
>>376978346
Is it bad that I saw Loss in this?
this one
>>376978346
A
>>376984097
Star Fox 64
>>376984156
>>376984148
>>376984156
what the fuck
>>376978346
A mix of F and E where you have a world map with more linear level progression with small splits between level paths, and a final world for getting 100% collectables. Like in the DKC games.
>>376981520
Are you talking about Vechs's stuff? Like the Super Hostile maps?
Those were fucking cool. I miss the days when he made maps and not Youtube videos.
>>376984364
Yeah and all its derivatives. There were a bunch of good ones over the years. It's a shame all he does now is his SAO-inspired Minecraft server. He even stopped making Canopy Carnage 2 for that garbage.
E mixed with F is my favorite personally
>>376984202
I almost had it figured for DCSS but the structure's way off and there's not enough stars. And the end would be way back at the beginning.
What is it?
>>376978346
Colony Wars had to have been my favorite level advancement. Kinda went like this
>>376984423
I don't even think he does Minecraft stuff anymore. Last few uploads were his Skyrim playthrough. Before that was Factorio stuff.
Minecraft is truly in its dying days as far as amazing community stuff goes.
>>376984773
Well no,I have a friend who plays on his server. It's still going strong, he just doesn't post videos on it much anymore.
>>376984625the structure is exactly that. I checked
you theoretically can begin to finish the game if you reach that point, and I omitted the 5 bullshit runes in the infinite door realm. so yeah
>>376984097
lost planet 2
>>376984879
Oh. Huh. Must've been a while since I've played, then.
C is always nice
>>376978346
D, E, and F are fine with me
>>376978346
F is such a clusterfuck. Anyone that picks that is a fucking pseudointellectual who thinks more complex paths=better when in reality it would require a disproportionate amount of effort to reach the level of content the others have while still being coherent, and may flat out not work for certain types of plot/gameplay styles.
D is the best, but if done well any one of them can be good.
Can someone explain F to me
>>376986135
F is a clusterfuck but it can work. Have you ever heard of The Witness?
>>376978346
I like games with Hub Worlds, but the order and manner in which you complete the various different levels gives you new options for later ones.
The most basic example is probably Megaman or something, but I prefer RPG-style games. I like to replay games over and over, trying out different weapons, spells, and playstyles along the way. Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 2 are probably the two games that did it best in my opinion. The rest of the Souls series is good too, but they're much more linear and more of a pain in the ass to replay. It's a big reason why I stopped playing Bloodborne faster than any other game in the series: most of the best weapons and levels are locked behind the mid-late game, and early game character builds are way too similar to each other.
>>376983483
>playing witcher at all
Good job falling for Slav memes
>>376978346
For anything plot based A or E. D will only work well if the game is 11/10 GOAT.
B can work for open world, but is in desperate need of rebalancing, and the game is probably shit anyway.
C and F are fine for stuff like mario and banjo kazooie
>>376978346
I really dislike C because when you have access to every level from the beginning, the difficulty curve tends to be static to compensate. Any level can be a player's "first" so they all need to ease you into the game, teach mechanics and that's nice for a first level but I don't want to have to deal with that shit throughout the entire game.
D can be cool but the only game I've played that utilized it was shadow the edgedog and it was kind of a bitch to 100% that shit.
A and E are both bog standard. I prefer E because at least it gives me a reason to play through again.
B is MMO shit and hardly worth mentioning.
F is weird and I guess could imply a genre where "levels" are just backdrops for gameplay such as in fighting or racing games. That or horridly pretentious indie games that keep you running around in circles to pad up that mandatory 2 hours.
>>376986141
have you played alpha protocol? like that. i really like it
>>376978346
CDE are the best ones.
A because I have maximum autism when I think I've missed something in a game
>>376978346
What the fuck is B supposed to be?
>>376978346
Which one would a game like Mega Man 7 & 8, Crash Bandicoot 2 and 3 matter? Where they give you a set of levels and you can pick among them, which order you can do, then once you complete that set, you can move onto the next set? Mix of C and D?
That way you get some order and freedom how to do them, but the later sets can accommodate for the earlier sets of levels as well for what you've done so far.
>>376986325
Nope. Just looked it up though, looks pretty damn interesting. And yeah I am aware that it can work, like I said any of them can work if done well, but some are obviously harder to get working than others, and I think in that list F is the hardest to do right.
>>376988375
I figure it's open-world RPGs where you can go anywhere, but each zone has its own level of monsters and going there too early will just get you killed.
>>376978449
fpbp
B & C
I like being in areas I'm not supposed to be in. Gives you the chance to find the ultimate challenge and test your skills before you become to powerful.
>>376978346
A or C mixed with E.
>>376988071
cycles of guilt
