on top of this, map design was way more linear than it tricked you into believing as well as having a pretty boring and shallow combat system

overrated but still good

Why the fuck did Andrew Ryan's accent change so much? His radio voice sounded different than the first time you "meet" him trying to escape the medical pavilion, and both sound different than when you meet him in person. And I don't mean tone, it honestly sounds like he has a completely;y different accent.

2/3 through the game i stopped hacking entirely. if i didn't have a hack tool or money to bribe the lock open (lol?), i just skipped the safe or whatever and moved on. it wasn't a fun or interesting mechanic. hacking minigames are always bad in every game, but bioshock's is one of the worst.

Honestly the only major flaw is the fact that you usually can't die, so there isn't much of a challenge. There was a dlc where you could turn off Vita chambers but it slows the intentional pacing of the game, so it's kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don't kinda thing. Overall though it's an amazing game.

>>
>>376972570

>>
>>376972664
Atlas actually felt like a character with depth. Then they tell you he's some Brooklyn gangster that's been pretending the whole time. I just didn't care at all.
>>
Vita chambers made the game babby mode shit for piss baby shitter shatter niggers and women and the game was either piss easy or the enemy was bullet sponges and you ran out of Eve or ammo to deal enough damage to them which didn't even matter past the beginning because then you become a god.

And the game was a one way track to railroad city. Railroaded down narrow corridors to shitville.

Bioshock is a legit 6/10 game at best. A shit/10 game.

>Peaches takes all your ammo, yet you get a fixed amount back at the end of the fight. Even if this amount is greater than what you gave him. Destroys the point of saving up resources up to that point.

>Hilariously easy. I have to turn off Vita-Chambers, play on Hard, and then unbind the medkit button to give me a challenge. Only sources of health are gene tonic bonuses, health stations, and food/booze.

>Should have had two paths after killing Ryan depending on whether you'd obeyed Fontaine in killing Little Sisters. One where you side with Tenenbaum (this route would be what is actually in the game) and one where you side with Fontaine (he kits you out with massive amounts of ADAM and sends you to assault Tenenbaum and get the Sisters back)

Nothing about Bioshock would surprise someone if they had any experience with System Shock 2 beforehand, it was almost pathetic how predictable a lot of the narrative was. Bioshock 2 by comparison was much more engaging despite the story being much more straightforward.
>>
>Bioshock 1
>Hacking minigame pauses the game
>You have to reload to switch ammo
>Can only use weapons or plasmids one at a time
>Chemical Thrower
>Collectible materials of which can be used to craft ammo and other items
>Camera records pictures
>Can upgrade all of your weapons to the max (2 upgrades per weapon)
>Can hold 9 first aid and hypos at a time

>Bioshock 2
>Hacking minigame is simpler and quicker but doesn't pause the game
>Distant hacking gun
>Switching ammo is quicker
>Can use both weapons and plasmids at a time due to "duel wielding"
>Level 3 elemental plasmids act like the chemical thrower
>Area of effect plasmids for level 2 elemental ones
>Expanded trap plasmids
>Escort little sisters for more Adam
>Camera records video
>Limited amount of weapon upgrades (3 upgrades per weapon)
>Hold a smaller amount of first aid and eve hypos at a time, in contrast to the first game.

I've played Bioshock many times but I've never actually played it with vita chambers off. For some reason it just feels like I'm "cheating" to make the game harder. Also this might sound stupid but I like having them on because Jack being able to use them is a part of the story.

The rereleases are unmitigated garbage on PC. Ports of unpatched console versions, super buggy and unstable, tons of issues. Just bump up the resolution on the original versions (which are free with the rereleases on Steam) and you'll be in better shape.

bioshock is literally not a videogame, it's a visual novel with extra steps. vita chambers mean there's no failstate, you can literally just run into a big daddy swinging a wrench and eventually kill him. games have a way to lose

>>
>>376986841
Because the player hasn't been going through the game with the mindset of how to deal with an escort mission.
>>
>>376987121

>>376987248
Yes, even though Little Sister extractions are optional, because the first one is required, players are told it's going to be a recurring thing throughout the game. Because the areas have more verticality and less linearity than the first game, players can keep that in mind when making their builds.
>>
>>376969131
It's my literal favorite game and I can name 3:
1. Research sucks, was good in 2
2. Hacking sucks, was good in 2
3. Plasmid upgrades are just linear and boring, in 2 they are actually interesting

Port those features from 2 into one and you have a perfect game.
>>
the gunplay is boring
every area looks like the same hallway
unoriginal narrative
>>
This is my favorite video game of all time and I can point out plenty: the entire third act feels tacked on, the final boss sucks, and the endings are about as stock as you can get. The moral choice system, while an interesting intitial choice with the first little sister you encounter, is limp as hell when you realize your punished for not being good. Fontaine's plan to have Jack hijack an aircraft and expect him to survive to make it to Rapture is a mind boggling leap of logic.

>dumbed down as fuck
>way too fucking easy
>Rapture just looks like one big subwqy station
>physics are terrible
>combat is absolute ass
>fails as a role-playing game
>fails as a horror game
>hacking costs nothing and only serves to turn every turret and camera into an instant environmental advantage
>objectivism is only appealing to idiot americans who still think health care shouldn't be free, the very idea is laughable everywhere else
But the most glaring flaw is that the Big Daddy/Little Sister dynamic simply does not work. You're supposed to feel sad for Big Daddies when you kill them, but unless you are autistic the only people who could concievably feel sorry for them are little kids playing a shooter for the first time in their lives. And you are supposed to feel sad that the Little Sister is crying but when you rescue her she fucking thanks you so you know they are all brainwashed. And harvesting them gives you barely any benefit in the long run, which means the option literally exists so that players can be an asshole for no reason. I could go on.

Don't even get me started on Bioshock 2, that game took Bioshock and made it worse.

Funnily enough I don't mind any of this. It's looking back on it that that helped Irrational iron out the kinks. Bioshock tried to be System Shock 3. Irrational needed to learn not to try making System Shock 3. So while Bioshock is one of the most overated video games of all time, liked only by self-absorbed hipsters and obese holier-than-thou virgin nerds, as it is an utter, abysmal failure to make a successor to System Shock 2 (at least in hindsight); if it wasn't for this game we never would have gotten the far superior Bioshock Infinite (A.K.A. the best video game of all time).

So even if Bioshock is bad, it ultimately lead to video gaming perfection. So it's not all bad.
>>
>THIS GAME HAS SUCH A DEEP MORALITY SYSTEM GOY....GUYS
>YOU CAN CHOOSE TO KILL LITTLE GIRLS.....OR NOT KILL LITTLE GIRLS!!!ISN'T THAT JUST GREAT!?!?!?
>>
>>376990039
My thoughts exactly. What gives me cause for concern for the (((people))) on this board is that you can find specimens who to this day unironically defend the original Bioshock (or worse, the garbage fire that is Bioshock 2) and talk shit about Bioshock Infinite.

It is troubling that such a number of people can be blinded to the turgid quality of a game simply by layering a couple of disposable features masquerading as "depth" on top of it that plays in to people's identities as social outcasts.

It is doubly troubling that their reaction to Bioshock Infinite is dismissive. Are they just such sheep that they want to look superior to "the masses" by not liking successful, beloved games; or given the fact that Bioshock Infinite tells a story about historical race relations in America, is the root of their reaction to the game something ultimately utterly different, something vile and ugly?

Food for thought.

You can't use a plasmid at the same time as a weapon, you have to awkwardly switch between them all the time while your left hand does nothing
>>
>>376969131
Literally the Plasmid system.

Did you ever realize the power of plasmids wasn't the damage they gave, but the effect they gave?

I literally never upgraded Shock or Flame because their damage sucked and with each damage upgrade they cost more to use.

Fuck that. I'd rather stun lock the fuck out of a splicer.

Why did Andrew Ryan let Jack just beat him to death? What the fuck was the point of that? He could've told Jack to shoot himself and he would've done it. Andrew Ryan holed himself up and hid for years just so he could die at the hands of his son? It makes no sense.

Predictable yet nonsensical plot.

If you wanna have a good challenge run though try playing without harvesting or saving any little sisters apart from the first mandatory one. Having to manage with just 2 plasmid slots plus only being able to use what you find gives a refreshing twist to the whole ordeal. Also fun trying to kill big daddies with a limited skill set though you can still cheese them with weapons and telekinesis.

Construction workers and maintenance crew live there too. Think of all the factories that would exist in a mega laissez-faire "utopia" down there, and all the people needed to run it. The whole point of the fall of Rapture was the civil warfare caused by class-oppression (further amplified by the discovery of EVE and ADAM).
>>
>>376991627
Andrew Ryan's ideals were more important to him than his own life. He was metaphorically "going down with the ship" so that Jack could live on to complete his vision post-mortem.

The twist was basically that there was no twist. I loved that. The second Sinclair got on the mic I knew he was going to betray me. Then when he does it hits you like a Mack truck. The game was great about playing into your expectations to subvert them.
