For a game that has standard story progression while still having different mechanics for character development among the four different races I personally suggest Final Fantasy Legend II for the Gameboy. It is quick and to the point while still having enough SaGa flair. Should take around 12 hours or so to complete. If you still feel pensive you can try FFL1 as well, but after that there is no more feet dipping since from Romancing SaGa 1~3, SaGa Frontier 1, and Unlimited Saga won't hold your hand with story progression and it isn't uncommon to feel lost.

FF4, 5 and 6 have a lot of adults that are actually professional in their fields and/or have a family.

Xenogears have a lot of adults and young ones know how to fight and have non-gameplay related skills and knowledge, also, all characters in this game experience some really heavy shit to be considered generic teenagers or young adults. Xenosaga has even less young adults and more or less, the same stuff applies.
