Coins are such shit, especially in 8 and 8D because it's the huge focus maintaining your coin count to keep your max speed is what causes that cluster fuck of backhole known as 3nd-9th. They work in Gba and Snes fine because the times are tolerable back in those games compared to 8

Good retro track selection, really tight kart physics, something Wii botched in favor of tight bike physics, removal of individual character stats, nerfed bottom screen to give items some more worth, items are more strategic than Wii and DD and doesn't have 8's coins. Wiggler is a fun newcomer and was actually pretty cool even though I usually don't care about rosters. Local multiplayer unlocks all courses even if only one person has a copy of MK7. Glider use and shortcuts were implemented very well, as there's plenty of ways to get around courses quicker like in GBA Bowser Castle or GCN Dino Dino Jungle, something 8 doesn't do quite as well.
It's my favorite Mario Kart, but it does have some flaws. The lack of a VS mode means that there's not much to in single player besides Time Trials, which is kind of an issue for a handheld. Random kart unlocks was annoying, too. Being released after Wii means that the game brought a slew of angry rosterfags in a series where half the games only had or needed 8-12 characters. Online and local multiplayer also lack the nametags on the top screen, something every other multiplayer Mario Kart had, even MKDS.

I didn't mean to imply DS was barebones, quite the contrary, just that MK7 which was on a much more powerful system somehow had even less content than its predecessor that came out nearly a decade earlier. It was clear Nintendo just wanted to cash in on the Mario Kart name quickly back when the 3DS was struggling.
