Kirby has the best music, and 64 is the epitome of Kirby soundtracks

Legit one of my favorite Kirby games of all time. Baffled as to why combining powers hasn't been used outside of it.

A wonderful and laid back experience to play on a quiet evening.

seems like a retro discussion but whatever.

great powerup system where you can combine powerups to create different ones.

lack of proper textures on most models is a bit strange but it works well enough.

It's a good game, but there are far better entries in the series. The main problems are: it's too slow (Kirby's running speed is pathetic). Power-combining limits each individual power and, consequently, the movesets are painfully reduced. Lastly, some crystal shards are hidden very obtusely.

The level design isn't terrible, but there's not a lot of variety and it gets stale, fast.

Other than that, great graphics, art, music, characters, scenes. It's a good game, but there are much better.

Gets too much hate.

People call it slow but its just a different style of game. It's more focus on puzzles. It has a great sense of atmosphere and the only kirby we're I really felt I was on an adventure. Also the soundtrack is phenomenal. Probably my favorite kirby game with adventure.

I would guess because it's kinda of hard to do if you are really young/new to the game.

Holy shit how lucky, those two games got their prices up for whatever fucking reason.

it's just most people don't care for that style, so it's not just blind hatred or anything

Fucking this. I was missing ONE shard for the longest time that was hidden in the floor in one of the last levels. You needed a certain power combo to break the floor (which apparently was color-coded to the power as a "hint"), which I remember being one I almost never used.

One of the best soundtracks in the series. A little slow and WAY too easy, even for Kirby.

Power mixing was cool, but underutilized and there were too many useless abilities. The base abilities also got gimped in terms of moves.

The minigames were a decent distraction and it's a very nice looking game overall.

10/10 visuals and music, nice levels, ability combinations is probably the most fun gimmick of any Kirby game. Some people say the gameplay is too slow but that didn't really bother me, at least not as much as it did in DL3.

The only complaint I have is that a lot of the crystal shards are just "you need this specific combination, also you can't go back and get it so just play this whole level again." But I remember that not being as annoying as DL3 either.

Kirby 64 is just incredibly enjoyable. The definition of "comfy". I understand if people find it too slow or easy, but that ease and pace really works well with the music and visuals to make for a wholely endearing game. A great one to play when you're feeling down

I have a lot of nostalgia for Kirby 64, won't lie about that. I remember seeing an ad for the game in an issue of Disney Adventures and having no idea what Kirby was, but I knew I wanted it. My family had a garage sale and I sold a lot of my older toys to help pay for it. Absolutely loved it back then, and it's still a game I like to sit down with every couple of years and beat. It's not hard and the copy power movesets are simple, but I liked combining powers and I'm surprised they never revisited that concept properly.

Also echoing the sentiment on how good the OST is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkYQZMKt6Y4

Best Kirby game because the powers actually felt "amazing" and "varied". Most Kirby games have the same basic shit: Ice, Fire, Rock, ect. Yeah there's some ones with weirder names like Cupid and UFO, but they almost all boil down to melee/ranged attacks. Not Kirby 64, it had shit like "turn into a fridge and shit out food to heal yourself with" and "get a fucking rock yoyo flying all over the screen randomly". You could actually play the game and not see every power, because mixing powers requires some actual thought instead of the blind "I'll just fucking use the first thing I see" shit we get normally.

Oh I misread your post as "for a 3DS game"
K64 is a 2D platformer in a 3D world, it tries to make use of 3D graphically and visually by giving his world depth and winding paths, but it's still a 2D game. I think it works but it might confuse some people.

You're the only one who has tried to say the opposite. And people talk about Kirby 64 in every Kirby thread. But you keep deluding yourself

Excuse me?
>>
It's a fantastic game, with its best points being the art/presentation, music, story, characters etc. etc. But while I enjoyed the shit out of it as a kid when I went back I was bothered by the gameplay itself. Everything else holds up, but when you compare it to Kirby games both before and after, movement is really slow and the powers are limited. Mixing them up is fun but once you have your power, there's not much you can do with it. It makes the game tedious and repetitive in a lot of areas, and it plays like Dreamland 3 except not as good.
Overall it's still worth a replay once in awhile. Not my favorite Kirby game but I've gotta say it gets the atmosphere down way better than most.
>>
>>376976340
Right, I agree. Except when we're talking about N64, where it ALL went from 2d to ALL 3d and they didn't know how to make a 3d game yet. N64 games don't hold up, and Kirby games are made for children. Like little children. As an adult they aren't fun to play and Kirby 64 is the worst offender.

The game is too slow to be enjoyable, the controls just feel fat and awkward, but the game's so easy that you never feel impeded by it. Mixing powers together sounds great on paper, but a lot of those ended up being completely useless or ridiculously overpowered, and fell into the contrived gameplay trap of needing a specific combo to break a barrier to get a crystal shard.

People STILL point to Super Star as being what Kirby's like when it's firing on all cylinders because the controls were tight and smooth, it made multiplayer viable for the series with the whole partner aspect, and you never felt limited by almost any of the powers because each one had multiple moves. Hammer, Sword, Cutter, Fighter, Parasol, Wing, Beam, all great powers.

Really, I feel like something that really stunts the Kirby series' gameplay is the forced shifting of powers to get everything. I'd like to see a system where Kirby has three slots for powers activated by different buttons. So you could rapidly shift between powers for a 1-2-3 combo. So say you do an uppercut punch as Fighter, then hit another button to dash through the air with Jet, then hit another button to spear down with Parasol. That way you can hit pause and re-adjust your "moveset" and have a lot more freedom in how you can play the game, as well as make combos that emphasize power, destructive force, or speed to access secret areas in time or to take on bosses that are more spongey.

And make it like Milky Way Wishes where you actually have to look for each power-up, but once you find it you have it for good. And then if you really want to go balls-out, make super secret rooms that add new moves to your copy abilities. And to not have Kirby feel too overpowered, his powers might have a finite energy meter to them that has to recharge or can recharge more quickly with enemy item drops.

I'm just kidding, it was most likely just a cute coincidence.
The Adofag's comment always got lots of likes and retweets, usually the most, when Ado did reappear her posts got more likes and retweets than the previous ones. Ado shaped up to be one of the more popular old characters, maybe the twitter fans showed she's more important than they thought, but on the other hand they've been bringing back nostalgic characters for the whole twitter feed and maybe they just decided "eh fuck it bring 'er back" and planned it from the start. Or maybe it's a bit of both. Either way they're probably listening to their fans, and it makes me happy. Now we'll have to wait and see if the absolute madmen bring her back in an actual game, which is much less likely but her chances aren't too bad anymore.

Just make it so that swallowing an enemy recharges the corresponding power. Other than that I like your idea.

Rather than finding powers themselves I think it'd be cool to find upgrades for powers. So swallowing a fire enemy would always give you Fire power, but maybe finding a specific upgrade would increase Fire's overall moveset.
>>
>>376976970
Are you done? Obviously you didn't spend enough time with your mommy and daddy, cause you're spending your free time shitposting nonsense about a game you don't like. Sver watch a pixar movie? Those are still enjoyable as an adult. So are kirby games. It's not hard to understand. You just have to be over the age of 15 and lack developmental issues so that you're not too edgy to be able to enjoy something "made for kids"

>>376966383
I will never understand how people can enjoy this game. I've never played such a slow, clunky, laggy mess. Kirby takes a year to start running after you press left or right. His run and air speeds are shit. Don't even get me started on the copy abilities. So many random nerds to basically every power. Use spark, or basically any power, then receive a huge plop of end lag. Every flicking time. Cutter. Oh my tucking goodness. WHY THE FUCK DOES USING CUTTER TAKE AWAY YOUR ABILITY TO RUN OR FLOAT? It's so tucking janky and slow. Most of the combined abilities suffer similar problems or are just dog shot useless, save for o e instance where it's required for one of those bullshit copy barriers hiding a crystal shart. Oh yeah, speaking of, they were placed in the laziest locations ever, usually just in corners or places slightly out of the way.
I hate this game.

To this day I'm not really sure why Nintendo hasn't made a proper sequel to this game, or at least implemented a lot of its ideas in some form.

The music is comfy, the atmosphere is relaxing, and it's just generally a fun game to play because it has a shitload of character and the level designs are incredibly cute,

I mean fuck man, the only time I felt disappointed with the game were the levels in Ripple Star, because the first one is a carbon copy of the first level in Pop Star, and the rest are more or less just boring enemy gauntlets. Either way, fantastic game all around.

It is really slow, it is particularly tedious to 100% the game without external help, and the environments have a bizarre low-poly feel to them (which is both good and bad for different reasons).
But the power mixing mechanic is really interesting, and it has some fun mini-games for multiplayer.

I wouldn't call it bad, but this is one of the few Kirby games that couldn't hook me.

That's an incredibly stupid complaint, but your "paise to switch abilities" shit is straight up retarded. It's such a ridiculous bastardization of the Kirby formula that is completely unnecessary. You'd have to completely redesign the game, because as they are now, there would be no use for it at all. The games are piss easy. Letting you constantly have 3 powers in one would just kill of the variety in levels that are given by having different powers be avaible in them
>>
>>376977720
This thread title says "opinions on Kirby 64", so to throw the word "shit post" around makes you look stupid. Like I'm trying to provoke a reaction, when in reality I truly feel the game is trash. Kirby doesn't work in 3d or 2.5d or whatever you want to call it. I have no problem with Kirby games, although I will admit they seem to child like as a whole to really hold an adult's attention for long. Kirby 64 is another matter though. It's garbage, and if you are seriously defending it so vigorously, then I honestly have to question your video game playing credibility. You must have terrible, awful taste in games if you get any kind of enjoyment out of Kirby 64, a game anyone, and I mean anyone, even people who don't play video games, could pick up and beat first try. There's no challenge, it's ridiculously slow, and it's uglier than most N64 games, a system known for having butt ugly graphics in hindsight.
>>
>>376978996

>>376978232
She is Shimomura's Meta Knight. She was designed and developed to be a unique and intriguing boss rising to main character status, filling her own niche, and it seems she stuck in the minds of those who paid attention to her in DL3 and K64. She was set up, built up, and she was gone, while Meta knight was set up, built up, and stayed. The fact that she stopped appearing only makes her more mysterious, and I think leaving her out of Air Ride and other upcoming games was a mistake. But it's understandable, since the creator left so there was no driving force to push the character, while the other director made sure Meta Knight would endure by sticking him in Air Ride. If Adeleine got one more appearance after 64 she never would have gone anywhere.

You have no idea how much demand there was for Meta Knight back in the day. From Kirby 3 to Kirby 64 fans were absolutely clamoring for him. I was one of the guys hyped to see him return for Air Ride, but I also expected Adeleine to return too, since it only came out a couple years after 64. I doubt she'll ever be the main character Shimomura obviously wanted her to be, but even if she reappeared as a recurring side character that would still be a victory for his legacy and those who enjoyed his direction. On that note it's looking like Kumazaki has a Meta Knight too, in the form of Magolor. I adore him as well, and he'd better be in the Kirby fighting game along with all the classics fans have been demanding.
>>
>>376979274
Meta Knight was set up, built up, and then character assassinated.
>>
>>376978531
I'd be fine if characters got their own dedicated section of the demonstration focused just on them. Kirby to Green Greens or Vegetable Valley, cut, Dedede to Mt Dedede, cut, Meta Knight to Halberd Deck. All I need is 10 seconds of Adeleine flinging around her brush to her spastic theme music and I'm sold.
>>
>>376978996
It's shitposting because you were samfagging your opinion constantly, and just saying "kiddy game, kiddy game"! And I'm not surpirised that a person saying stupid shit like that immediately goes into "video game credibility" and "it's easy, so if you like it, you're not a real gamer" bull shit. Seriously, you must have no social skills/self awareness or be 15, but if you want to keep hammering your idiotic opinion down this threads throat, go ahead. I'll prove my videogame credibility after you provide yours. What are your favorite games? Also, notice how even the people who don't like the game don't say it is ugly. Never played that game, but if it makes sense to you that way, sure. And again, I don't think it'd be overpowered because most Kirby enemies die in one hit, anyway. So how you combine your powers into a combo is more you being smart about how to get through those rooms that are gauntlets where there's enemies everywhere. Imagine pressing one button to flash into a wheel and rip down the lane but then pressing another button to activate your Yo-Yo power to stop on a dime and shoot straight up to destroy an enemy the wheel couldn't outrun. Shit like that. Or maybe you could instead run through the room and stay in the air with Parasol while keeping off the ground with jumping. More ways to play should be the name of the game. And while Kirby bosses have really been beefed up for the better in recent years, I think attaching moves to a depleting meter that can fully recharge in say, ten seconds would make for a better fight because you can't just mash the shit outta the buttons and win.

I think that sort of thinking can actually be really limiting on a game's creativity. While there are definitely powers which would be sort of odd and difficult to combine, i think if mixing returns, they should absolutely strive to make it possible to mix more outlandish abilities like psi, fighter, etc. They should be challenging themselves rather than playing it safe with your basic elementals. Also I'd love it if some abilities combined to create smash bros cameos. Ninja + water = Greninja hat and smash bros moves. Maybe have the smash ability mix with things to have a variety of cameo abilities. I'd love it if we somehow got a Bayonetta abil I ty with a full moveset complete with bullet arts and wicked weaves.

Most of K64's levels are just flat plains with enemies and hazards on it.
Especially when it gets to the Neo Star.

Too much of it is just a big flat planes with enemies sprinkled on top of it. Sometimes there's a bump.

Pop Star, Shiver Star, and Ripple Star I remember being really good. The ones inbetween I remember just wanting the levels to end.

played through the game as a kid, and never combined abilities. Also why can't it emulate properly?
>>
>>376982712
So that makes is "some of the worst levels designs ever in a side scroller"? And if you remember those three worlds being good, you must mean that the others are just planes? Cause Rock Star had a maze of ruins and outrunning rising sand in its first level, in addition the spaceship level you had to climb up through and the cave with multiple paths and a water section where you had to ascend and descend while avoiding falling bones
>>
>>376983348
n64 emulation is terrible

>>
>>376983348
the n64 was built on black magic, shit's confusing to emulate.

>>
>>376983437
Bad level design is more than just it being obstructive or nonfunctional, it also means boring or forgettable. From rock star, I remember the Pyramid, the Spaceship, and the plains. That's it. What I just described were three levels out of six, and I have no idea what the last three were even about.

Shiver Star was the frozen lake, the mall, the factory, the weapons depot, and the snowboarding level. Pop star was the intro, the ruins, the forest, the big drop, and the treetops.

I only remember one of the most annoying sections in the game in the Aqua star. Rock star was the pyramid and spaceship, so I'll give it that. I don't even remember what the deal was with the Neo Star other than it having one of the cloud levels and one of the best remixes of butter buildings.

I mean, I was just contesting your own claim of "flat plains with enemies and obstacles on them". You saying they are forgettable is entirely subjective, and has more to do with visuals than mechanucal level design. I remember most of Kirby 64's levels. They are all pretty fun and unique from a visual standpoint, in my opinion. A game like NSMB, on the otherhand, I doubt if I could remember a single specific level. But, while those games are cheaply made, even then, I don't think they are poorly designed. And I certainly don't think there is a case at all to be made for K64's levels being some of the worst designed ever in sidescrollers. You're certainly not making it, especially when you praise 3 of the worlds in their entirety
>>

Its been officially translated as "action fighting game", I only ever brought up the original japanese a while back to prove that its not a mistranslation or misused/vague genre. Both the wording in Japanese and English are usually associated with competitive action games with some kind of roster or classes (I mean, what else do you think of when you hear "fighting game"?)
The japanese term even has a jap wikipedia page that classifies more traditional/complex fighting games under this general, broader genre. The kanji that makes it up commonly translates to match-up or similar concepts, and if it matters any the Spanish translation uses "lucha". It all points to evenly matched fights, brawls, punch ups, competitions, matches, fighting games basically

Point is there's not much space for mental gymnastics around what "fighting game" may mean, just about all the specifics of it are still up in the air, but air ride 2 or amazing mirror 2 are a no-go unlike back when "multiplayer action game" was all we had

Late update. Got some basic movement down with some basic animations. All physics based too which will come in handy later on in development. I know the camera's jittery, that's the next thing I'm gonna work on. After this is adding the ability to jump and puff. Then I tweak until it matches Air Ride as close as I can.

Its two miiverse posts by now and 3 instances of the same wording among them, plus the original japanese and all the international translations
Anyone expecting melee 2.0 most complex fightan with 52 fighters including adeleine's obscure third cousin is bound to be disappointed, but its not "too hopeful" to take HAL's word for it. As has been said it could be any kind of game where players fight each other, and a series spanning roster is only natural for the anniversary year (plus it'd be a pretty lame game otherwise, Fighters Deluxe already did abilities). Who will be playable, how good it will be, how complex/slow/fast it will be, what will the gameplay even be? don't know, no way to know yet

>>376989897
I mean, what more do you need? It literally says action fighting game, fighting game is a specific genre and has a specific type of game associated with it, which is the same for the wording used across all the languages. If they meant anything else they would've either kept it as "multiplayer action" or used a more appropriate description
Again, anything past that is speculation, but it gives a far better idea and ballpark than "action fighting game", as its already ruled out the Air Ride and Amazing Mirror sequel hopes

>>
>>376990436
That looks bad, the speed is fine. The only problem it has is sluggish control and momentum killing moves.
1) You should be able to cancel any animation with any input. Animations can not be cancelled, they have to play out before you can make your next move, making the controls feel a bit sluggish.
2) no moves should stop you unless you need to stop, like needle+needle. you should be able to walk around doing needle+spark or swinging your cutter+fire without it stopping you dead in your tracks for example.
If those 2 things were applied to Kirby 64 it would feel perfect.
>>
>>376990314
While my speculation is as good as anyone's, I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the chances of an original engine, specially for a game that doesn't have to be tied to it. Kirby Fighters was a mini game originally because it could work off the pre-exsisnting engine and abilities and adjust it, which meant as expansion was also tied down to the engine, and its easier to re-use for a mini-game than re-invent the wheel.

This is a spin-off with a specific multiplayer focus, and if its to be a fighting game and a fully fledged one featuring more than Kirby, re-using the engine would be far more of a detriment and restriction than it would be a benefit or cost saving measure. Fighters was taking single player platformer Kirby and tweaking it to work in multiplayer for a quick mini-game, but this kind of project would work far better if built from the ground up with this own gameplay tailored for its multiplayer focus.

They're not allergic to new engines, in fact the part of HAL that wasn't making main games was making RC in a completely new engine and graphic style, so even if they've moved over to 3DS it doesn't mean they'll have to work off the platformer engine.
They probably chose the 3DS because of portable play, large install base, Switch being too risky this early on, and, provided they include it, free online

Probably because you expect to be disappointed no matter what
>but if its good I'll be surprised and if its not I won't be dissapointed
Maybe if you kept your expectations neutral, but you even said you had a dream scenario, but are bracing for and expecting the worst. The game is non-existent to us and you've already made up your mind on how it failed your dreams and dissapointed. You're expecting quite a lot of it, just not in a positive way, "low expectations" would be close to no expectations at all, but expecting it will disappoint you from the get-go is a pretty high bar. At this point you're even expecting it will go against conventional thinking and logic (make a new engine for a new kind of game) just to disappoint you.
Its a self fulfilling prophecy, no matter what comes out you'll be disappointed, even if it was better than your worst case scenario, and you'll turn around and tell yourself you saw it coming.

There's a point where it just becomes being cynical for the sake of it, I'd rather not expect anything past what has been officially stated (which isn't much to go by, so I'm neutral on it) until we actually see the game, or at the very least not treat the worst case scenario as truth until otherwise proven

Look at this way, its much harder to change someone's mind or for them to turn around on an opinion, if you expect the absolute worst you'll be biased against anything that challenges that mindset, looking for the worst in things to justify this self-defence mechanism against disappointment. Instead of looking to be decently surprised you'll be looking to satisfy your cynicism.

The games that have most surprised me and made me really happy where the ones where I had zero expectations coming in, I usually try to give most things a chance and end up finding a lot of hidden gems, many that could be deemed objectively flawed. If I expect a game to be shit chances are I won't even touch it enough to be proven wrong, which I probably don't want to be if I've been running around telling myself its shit.

>Some new character steals all the sweets in Dreamland
>Everyone gets all hostile and upset
>Kirby and the animal friends set out to get sweets back
>With Kirby suddenly off now, Meta Knight suspects he might be the culprit
>Dedede's just an asshole and tries to place the blame on Kirby or something
>The jackass that stole the sweets indirectly (or directly, never finished the story concept) ends up summoning the games villains, the "Sweet Demons" (never came up with an finalized name for them) who would wreck havoc upon Popstar due to the lack of sweets or some shit

You don't need any to progress. You're not forced to get a certain amount to complete the next levels, or go to the next world, you just get a bad ending and miss the "true" final boss if you won't collect them, which is a small amount of content only for dedicated players. You don't need a shard to actually complete it. I wish more Kirby games would do good and bad endings instead of locking the "true" final boss behind a "true" arena with little narrative weight beyond a blurbs or two.

Huh, i honestly didn't even realize that it originated from the manga, because it became so entangled with Kirby's identity. I can see why you don't like it, but it's a cute noise. Though, in my mind, Kirby's deafult manner of expressing himself is the "HIIII!" From 64

I find those animals that were trapped inside those capsules cute.

I always thought they were creating them; the cat was my favorite.

No in the manga he speaks full sentences like in the game manuals. He doesn't speak full sentences in-game because he's a Nintendo protagonist and it's completely unnecessary.

Yes and I know how Kirby ends.

The games in which he's the most noisy is the Samsh Bros. franchise, and even them "Poyo" isn't part of his laguage. He still makes a lot of cute noises.

Well he still kinda does in Epic Yarn, Mass Attack, or Star Stacker. And Kirby's Avalanche.

I assumed they were. It's too coincidental to see a cat and a little girl inside those capsules, and later on see many Kekes outside the Ripple Castle.

What does "Poyo!" mean? Should I be offended? Did he call me a nigger?
