It's not HORRIBLE like /v/ says it is but it's certainly not a good game. It's just okay.

It was the most impressive looking game I've ever played though. The in game graphics put that of many FMVs to shame.

I cannot for the life of me figure out why /v/ thinks Deus Ex is so great. It sucked when it was new. I replayed it a few months ago and it still sucked.

Mighty No. 9, it's okay/decent, while /v/ makes it seem like an awful game.
>>
>>376956947
fuck off, it's very bad.

when literally the only thing you have worth looking at is your story, because every other aspect of the game is half-assed and terrible, PLUS the story the game relies on is terribly cliche, contrived and a waste of time, it's a bad fucking game.
>>
>>376957114
Pretty fun. Of all the Telltale style on-rails games it's probably the best one. You don't really have an influence on the story but the number of scenes you can miss out on in one playthrough is pretty damn impressive.

>>376957154
I disagree. The gunplay was fun, though not nearly frequent enough.

Also, many of the most widely considered "best games ever" have their story as the strongest point. Say what you want, but a strong story can absolutely carry a game.

I honestly can't think of a worse game that I've actually played than The Order.

Usually story-based games with subpar gameplay, like Telltale games or the like, at least have an interesting story or thought provoking decisions for the player to make.

This shit was just the blandest story ever set in the dullest reimagining of the Knights of the Round Table possible with characters that were so shallow that they were impossible to care about. And the players made absolutely no decisions, just waddled through this boring story in the most by-the-books Gears of War rip-off gameplay.

I just can't think of a single worthwhile thing about this shit. It took no risks, and even then, it still failed.

>Every other gun is just the generic one outside of the crossbow mission and that one "Hold the line" portion where you get the electric rocket launcher.
There really needed to be more shooting and less QTEs. The last chapter was the best part of the game because you finally got hordes of enemies mixed with the Thermite Rifle and it's over in like two minutes.

It's also very disappointing how much they squandered the setting, they had an actual good setting with a good premise and then did absolutely nothing with it to set up some sort of massive betrayal of a character who never got developed at all and the final boss is a guy you literally do not give two shits about. I was so mad. I can't imagine how pissed people who paid $60 for it were.

>better level design
Fucking what? Galaxy 2's level designs are extremely stretched out and incoherent. They took the design philosophy of "multiple small planetoids" and took it too far, resulting in worlds that are all far apart and no fun to actually run around in, as well as having no sense of place. Even levels like Space Junk Galaxy in 1 felt "together" like it was one big section of space you were on. 2's on the otherhand are these disjointed messes. They feel more like 3D World levels than Galaxy levels, and while I agree 2 was more challenging I also feel it lacked the spark of originality present in much of 1.
>>
>>376957443
that is my point exactly. if you want a story to be your strong point, fine. but the story in The Order is fucking abysmal. the writing is comically bad. pair that with the super generic gameplay and it's just an all-around waste of time.

while a game like The Last of Us is ehhh gameplay wise but has a decent story to back it up.
>>
It wasn't that bad if you bought it for 15 buckaroonies on sale or something, but it was nothing short of daylight robbery at 60 dollarydoos.
>>
>>376962725

And 3D World levels are straight platforming. The Galaxy games are inbetween the design philosophies of the early 3D titles and the newer ones, some sandbox-like running around but also more straight-up platforming than there was in the early games. Galaxy, in its best moments, is basically the FLUDD-less levels in Sunshine with stripped down controls and gravity shenanigans. Galaxy 2 focused more on making a game with that kind of design than the sandbox style of the early games, whereas Galaxy 1 was more of a mix. Here's the thing though - Galaxy was never that great at the sandbox approach. At best they were still smaller levels than what 64/Sunshine offered with less satisfying movement aside from maybe verticality due to the spin. Galaxy 2 does away with much of that and focuses on what Galaxy actually did well, which was more straightforward platforming challenges. There's less running around but that's to Galaxy's benefit, not detriment. As for having a "sense of place", it's a Mario platformer so who cares? Galaxy 1 did do that better and that's nice I guess but I liked playing 2 more.

I've been passively interested in Catalyst but I hear the skill trees fuck things up. How much impact does it have on the game?
>>
>>376966186
Nah, Catalyst is a prime example of turning a linear series into an open world one completely destroys all focus the series had.

>>376967275
No I totally agree. I own Mirrors Edge 1 on like three different platforms, and i've beaten it at least 7 times.
Mirrors Edge Catalyst is the better game, gameplay wise. Stuff like being able to vault on any object to like double jump to higher ledges, the new sliding mechanics where you can slide into a roll to regain momentum, the polegrabbing mechanic to swing around corners, etc. All that shit feels so fucking good to execute.
But it's just something about the game itself that doesn't click. Maybe it's the fact that the game isn't that varied, level-design wise. ME1 has you in the sewers, in malls, in subways, and more. Stuff was always changing, while I feel that Catalyst is just city, city and more city with no real shakeups to the formula which makes it feel repetitive. Oh, that, and the combat system redux which I didn't like despite it being better than the first games combat.
Oh and the progression system can suck my dick. Rolling requiring an unlock? Fucking please, that shit needs to be in the game from the start
>>
>>376967739
What? There are tons of weapons and armor. There's even a fairly robust crafting system that was one of the few bits of the game that I thought was well executed. What do you mean?
>>
>>376967610

It is great on paper, but since making parkour look interesting relies on setpieces and getting the player to do it in a certain way it quickly becomes a nightmare.
>>
>>376967890
Yeah I'll agree with the varied environments and unlocking argument. I still think it was a better ME game overall. Doesnt deserve the hate it gets.

Gunshot cut to black? GUNSHOT CUT TO BLACK?!
>>
>>376967890

That's the open world curse. ME was linear so they could push you into a variety of locations and have vary the level design on the assumption you're getting better at the game as you go on. With open world, there's no telling when a player would go to an area.
>>
>>376967610
It's the fact that the open world is a two-way street
Many of the enviroments in the city require going one way and one way only, rather than splitting out into different splinter paths. These splinter paths are also so boring because you run through them so many times it becomes tedious, especially when many of these paths have little variation to them
Had I designed the game, i would have made each major area it's own mission with multiple mission objectives to complete in any order that affected the other missions- like perhaps the rich, purple docking area hub having more air security if you do a mission that affects the police force in some way.
