I played this one and now I wonder what is it that makes /v/ have orgasms about this game.
The gameplay is nice and all, given that it is a bad port of a console game and ignoring the issues of managing to run the game, but everything else is very sub-par.
Most companions are boring and irritating, and add nothing at all to the game. Dark Side options are so fucking childish that I couldn't bother trying to go that way. All the planets are boring and poorly designed.

I played a little of Sith Lords and the dialogue was much better, but it's so bugged that just stopped playing.

that's not a gameplay need, though. the game tells you when it's going to happen so you can finish up any sidequests, and most rpgs that do it still let you grind even after you go past the point of no return.
moreover, when you fuck with the narrative that much, it takes people out of the immersion and ends up having a net negative impact. there are games that are all about gameplay and there are games that are all about story, but a lot of the better games try to strike a balance. if it goes too far in the story direction and sacrifices gameplay to that end, it might end up like planescape: torment, a really great story but the gameplay is super janky. if it goes too far in the other direction, you might get a really fun game but the story's going to end up full of plot holes and shit that doesn't make sense and it's not going to be particularly memorable. you don't see people still talking about red faction's story or just cause's story; they were fun as fuck, but they weren't really about the story and as a result they didn't really have much in the way of a lasting impact.
not every game has to be pure gameplay. kotor 2 and fonv are two of my favorite games and they make sacrifices here and there for the sake of a consistent narrative, and it works just fine for them.

It kinda spoils the essence of Star Wars by spelling out the truth. People think it deconstructs Star Wars, but I think it just reinforced the subtlety of what makes Star Wars such a cultural touchstone. I don't really see any elements of deconstructionism in Kotor 2. Probably the biggest difference for me is not the obvious deconstruction and questioning of the underlying philosophy of the force, the Jedi and the setting in general, but the overall shift in tone.
KotOR 1 has this whole epic heroes on an epic quest thing going on, with a rag tag bunch of unlikely buddies going on adventures, saving the world together and learning to appreciate each other. It's much more like Star Wars (or any other good guys vs bad guys movie, really) in its tale of heroism or villainy.
KotOR 2 on the other hand has this oppressive, gloomy atmosphere hanging over it. You still go on adventures, you still save the world (Nihilus), but the overall mood is radically different. Every place you visit is a total shithole that makes it a point to show how terrible the daily life of the people is. And most of all, you are not a jolly adventuring party anymore. Everyone on the ship has his own agenda and dark secrets. And they all constantly bicker and argue, with genuine hate. Think about it - there's not a single pair of companions who actually like and trust each other.

Kotor 2's main conflict is Nihilus eating the entire goddamn universe. Like the other anons said, get the Restored Content Mod for II, /without/ the Droid Planet - this is important, especially for a first-time player. If you want to experience it, save it for a later playthrough. Get the Invisible Headgear mods for both games, too.
Any class is viable, so just build the type of character you want.

The only skill you really need on your main character in the first game is Persuade (for obvious reasons), though Treat Injury can be useful. In the second game, it's much more important to have skills on your main character - Persuade is even better, it's tremendously useful to have enough Awareness to pass checks of 15 or so (since it also functions in conversation, unlike the first game) and there are a lot of nice dialogues you need a decent Wisdom to get (13+ or 14+, I think, though I'm fairly sure the game checks your modified Wisdom from clothing and such). Most of the other skills (everything except Stealth, really) are also useful to have, at varying levels, but none are as critical as those three.

It's entirely possible to have your party members drag you through Taris (Carth and Zaalbaar are great at lower levels and Mission is incredible if you know how to use her for sneak attacks), but you're right in that I wouldn't recommend it for a new player, just because it's needlessly annoying.

The more heavy the armor the less Dex bonus you'll receive. So an armor of 5 max dex bonus will only use up to 5 dex points.

Every 2 attributes above 10 give you +1 [attribute] bonus that affects dice rolls and shit, you can check it in the stat menu. Armor limits that bonus.
