Pewdiepie is popular because he had the perfect mix of having the right idea in the right place at the right time. He's untalented as fuck, he just happened to make a webcam LP of a then popular game that most people would rather have watched than played because they were pussies and or 12. Then, he moved around a lot meaning his videos appeared in multiple countries algorithms giving him more exposure than normal. Using a webcam was a newly emerging idea at the time. Pewdiepie wasn't amazingly attractive when he started, he looked like a greasy stoner, but he was cute enough that girls began watching his videos as well as guys who were watching anyway. Finally, Pewdiepies humor is objectively immature and unsensical. The kind of humor that appeals to children, who also happen to be the majority of people who decide to watch videos on Youtube. People like his humor because he'll mention "mature" things like rape but in the most obnoxious and immature way possible so that children can feel like they're being exposed to adult material, which appeals to them because kids are insecure about their age, and because it's a novel area for them.

TL;DR, Pewdiepie's fame is a complete accident. He was lucky.
