That's absolutely no excuse. They had five years to work on it, and it had already been delayed once (it was originally due last year). EA needed to ship it before the end of their financial year. I seriously doubt the ability of the team originally working on it to have brought it up to standard anyway. Most of them were let go even before it shipped, so it's not them doing this patch work.

I haven't played this game, but "we weren't close" isn't a "not care" option. And they're not having an argument either.

Some of the shit coming out about this game's development is amazing. BioWare Montreal's only experience in regards to Mass Effect prior was ME3's multiplayer. They had never touched story-driven or narrative content, which almost explains why the gameplay seems slick but the story, face animations, voice acting, writing etc is all shit.

Montreal was scaled up drastically to make this game, so the team was young, untested, and uncoordinated. EA leveled multiple mandates on them, including pushing the engine and using new tech on animations. BioWare core offered to touch up animations but that was rejected (???). A lot of early stuff was running on comp hardware, and had to be scaled back when they actually got next gen dev kits. There was lots of red tape in regards to changing character appearance, apparently to be PC. A lot of vital cutscenes were done last second by drastically overworked animators because the new tech they were using produced even worse results than what we've seen.

A lot of the post-release patching was simply stuff slated to be done, but EA ramped up the release by a whole six months.

I'm not surprised. The "THIS IS AN AAA GAME IN 2017" complaint always felt wrong to me; everything about this game smelled like big ideas given inadequate budgets and timelines.

/v/ claims EA was blindsided by this game's failure, but I personally doubt that. This whole game is like a movie set - looks impressive from the outside, but there's nothing behind the front wall, and I'm sure EA designed it that way.

He was highly anticipating ME:A, got the most premium pre-order on it. Last I talked to him he still hasn't beaten it, and says he's not sure if he will because he's so disappointed with it. Most of the dev team were let go or reassigned. Bioware Montreal has been turned back into a small support studio and the franchise shelved. There isn't going to be an Andromeda 2. The next Mass Effect game you see will be another reboot. At best you might get Ryder's story wrapped up in some comics or novels.

That's why they are being forced to focus their efforts on patching this one before they can move on to starting work on the sequel.

Which is also why the team got gutted, because of redundancies. They don't all need to be there unless they are working on the sequel, which they aren't, so everyone who isn't essential gets moved off to other projects while the people necessary remain to patch the game.

The same problem that sees Halo 3 on not ported to PC: developers/publishers don't want *some* money, they want *all* the money, and if something is, out the door, not going to get *all* the money, COD MW2 levels of money, they don't want to even discuss it. At this point, ME is a hurt brand and will never in anyone's estimation pull the kind of sales that could edge on ~75-80% of all possible sales, so Execs don't care. The all or nothing attitude of sales in the developers is disgusting.
