Why do big companies insist on trying to compete with steam by making their own platform? There are many EA games that I love which I cannot enjoy because they are only sold on god awful Origin. They must realize they are losing money by refusing to publish their games on steam, right? They cant possibly think that they will replace steam? Honorable mentions: Uplay, Games for microsoft.
>>
They keep all the profits instead of having to give Valve 30% of each sale.
>>
>>376917302
Yes but the increase in sales they would get from steam would make up for the 30%.
>>
Origin is really no different from steam in 2017. You're just coasting on hate from years ago, back when PC gamers treated Gabe Newell like some kind of philosopher king.
>>
>>376917497
Origin is atrocious. It only exists because EA is the money hungry monster that it is. Imagine if EA released. some of their classics on steam, you know they would sell like crazy.
>>
>>376917785
Steam is atrocious. It only exists because Valve is the money hungry monster that it is.
>>
>>376917481
They've probably done the math and decided getting more cash per sale via origin puts them ahead of selling a higher quantity of games on Steam.
>>
>>376917137
So what's wrong with origin again?
>>
>>376917497
>Origin is really no different from steam in 2017.
>>376918396
>So what's wrong with origin again?
Shills pls.
>>
>>376917302
Valve negociates with bigger companies, EA could easily get a better deal than 30%. Valve would bend over backwards for 10% of EA's sales.
>>
>>376918524
>buy game
>download game
>play game
severs are decent, better download speeds than steam
what the problem?
>>
>>376917497
>You're just coasting on hate from years ago
I don't think EA has given me any reason to stop hating those asshole.
>>
>>376918364
No, they've done the math and realized that if they just stick it out with their cancerware they'll eventually probably maybe surpass steam as where everyone buys their games and then they'll finally be making the big bucks and they can really screw their customers over and force games to uninstall every year and require subscriptions to reinstall and you have to buy games you own once every two years and oh my gosh what if we sold mods like steam was going to do we can even sell our bugfixes

Basically they're greedy as fuck but are losing money on origin etc. compared to listing on steam because they're hoping to supplant steam in the future to really fuck people over

I don't like steam's DRMl I'd prefer GoG was the market leader, but steam is a good sight less cancerous than the bullshit that ubisoft, ea, and microshit would come up with
>>
>>376918676
>defending ea

It's the price you gotta pay to play modern games online. It's aint pefect but really what the big deal?
>>
>>376918676
Well for starters everyone of their games is usually 40$ and up. They try to make up for this by having sales but the sales are abysmally small, like 5% off. I fail to see how steam is atrocious, they give a platform to hundreds of indie games that would otherwise have to go off of kickstarter. Also EA only puts new games on Origin, games that they can charge top dollar for.
>>
>>376918676

>better dl speeds

Literally exactly the same. Although maybe you'd notice a difference running on your ethiopian mudhut crank operated internet, can't say I'd know.
>>
>>376917137
>>376917481
This isn't the first time EA has willingly lost out on sales just to fuck over another company.
>>
>>376919131
Name one game published by EA that is worth playing online.
>>
>>376918934
Yes gotta love the cancer that origin brings whenever you turn your PC on and it tries to automatically start up. I had to delete it, it became too much.
>>
>>376919131
>It's the price you gotta pay to play modern games online.
No. You don't HAVE to pay it. That's the whole point.

They just know they can MAKE you pay it, and you eat that shit right up. Stop eating shit, then you won't be served shit.
>>
>>376919275
You can just disable that, Steam has the same option.
>>
Origin and Steam are identical.

People who say otherwise are shilling.
>>
>>376919131
>>376919394
Or I could just not let that trojan on my computer, just like steam
>>
>>376919131
This is the exact reason I hate EA. Steam will make new servers for old games (Age of Empires 2) and only expect you to buy the regular game. Origin just rapes you on everything. They are trying to bring expensive pricetags to PC.
>>
>>376919168
My friends say they can max out their 100Mb/s connections on origin servers, but not on steam. It does help when you're downloading 30GB+.

Battlefield is fun.

>>376918524
>>376918916
It isn't 2011 anymore. Origin is fine now. I've had no problems with it for years.

People used to bitch about Steam just like this.
>>
>>376919805
I can max out my connection on Steam. Never had an issue with that. 100mbit while I still got the full bandwidth, now 50mbit because I'm restricted by wifi.
>>
>>376919805
I can hit my max of 160ishMb/s on Steam. I guess it depends on your local servers.
>>
>>376918751
FIFA 17 more than made up for EA's past mistakes. They've grown as a company. All the shi**y people (managers/execs) have left now.
>>
>>376917137
worst is, that origin can lead to a frozen computer with win10 if you don't manually update it.
>>
>>376919695

Ubisoft is the one playing this the hardest, they have their shit on steam, through their own service and through origin thanks to a deal ubisoft and ea made a while back to sell their shit on each other's platform.
>>
>>376917302
Yet EA is happy to pay Apple 30%, Google 30% for using their stores on their platforms. It's good having the competition and not having all your eggs in one basket (the amount of times Steam has gone down) but wouldn't they make more money having their games on Steam as well?
>>
>>376917137
I don't mind the competition. Competition on marketplaces is good. I'm not fond of the exclusivity though. IE valves games not being on other markets and EA's newer games not being on steam (though that's a blessing since I stopped buying anything from EA after ME2).

So you're bashing Origin because of other shit that EA has done in the past instead of on its own merits? Got it.
>>
>Calling other people shills for defending origin

You fucking retards really have no idea how brainwashed you are.

Every DRM platform is the same thing with different skins.

You don't think Holy Steam is a botnet?

Why don't you tell me how many instances of WebHelper you have running right now?

Keep hating other DRM platforms because the internet tells you to. Don't ever bother doing your own research or seeing for yourself, that's too much effort.

I support other DRM platforms because Gabe shouldn't get a 30% cut from every fucking PC game sale.

I use origin, steam, uplay and galaxy because I care more about playing games than completely fabricated software politics.

Yes, pretty much. Because you can't distinguish between the two of them. Supporting Origin is supporting EA, and EA reminds us that they're a soulless corporation that will destroy anything for a profit on a yearly basis. Sometimes more often.
>>
>>376920946

How does this affect you? You'd still be paying the same fucking price for games if Valve was taking .0002%

>>
>>376917137
Steam is rubbish they were just lucky to be first to market. It's not just about the % cut either, Devs and publishers want control over the catering of news, social features and game updates. They also want your contact information (remember when games had registration cards in the box?) for capitalistic reasons that should be obvious.

And with the shitshow that is steam communities, user reviews, steamworks and the steam UI, I don't blame them. Bethesda are the latest to make a launcher because of how much bad press they got from Doom Multiplayer Beta steam reviews.

Steam is just bad business if you can afford to do it yourself. If the game is AAA people will find out where to buy it.

>>376921114
>I've been formatting my posts like this since..

Well, they keep making the same games, and at the slightest sign of weakness they'll kill yet another studio.

But yes, Valve has realized that Steam is better business for them. And Valve is rotting, too - Gabe's getting greedier every year, and burning through goodwill fast.
>>
>>376917137

Exclusivity is bad for consumers.
Competition is good for consumers.

Wanting games to be on Steam because you don't like Origin is okay. Wanting Steam to have a monopoly on digital distribution is not okay.

>>
>>376921958
I think part of it may also have been trying to compete in a market that's not large enough for a lot of games.
>>
>>376921774
GoG's a pretty good alternative and my go-to for games outside of steam.

Origin is complete cancer, you have to be a fucking retard to buy anything on it. It doesn't even function as well as steam does.
>>
Competition is good but the problem here is that valve didn't try to use any business tactics to keep an important publisher on board with their platform. They gave them the same deal they gave everyone else despite how much more they brought to the table on an annual basis. It's easy to dislike EA but their presence is very noticeable when taken away from the steam store. It was up to valve to try and negotiate their terms and see if they could be enticed to come back but instead they let things happen without interfering in any way. Which I'd be fine with if valve still made games but if they're not going to be doing that they should at least manage their assets better.
>>
>>376922157
I use GoG as well. I like it. I enjoy the simple no DRM stance, that said, I don't mind Steam's DRM either. I only get annoyed when a game on steam adds another layer of DRM to their games.

Because you stick out like a retard in the crowd.

>>
>>376922251
It wasn't about wanting a deal. EA wanted to sell ME2 DLC and not pay a dime to valve. If they wanted a deal, they would have said something about it.
>>
>>376922251
>It's easy to dislike EA but their presence is very noticeable when taken away from the steam store.

The only thing that's noticeable in the steam store is that it's getting flooded with trash. EA not being there is a good thing in my book.
>>
>>376922251
>but their presence is very noticeable when taken away from the steam store.

>>
>>376922353

Reddit spacing is a new meme, and an easy way to spot kids.

Stop trying so hard to fit in
>>
>>376922546
So basically, the market would be large enough if the rest of the market were to shrink? Yes, I suppose that's true for every market, but as it stands, there just wasn't an open niche for titanfall.

They had a shot, there was an opening for people tired of csgo and hat fortress, but they would've had to be faster than overwatch.

Double spacing between paragraphs is standard when paragraphs are not indented. Long posts of multiple long paragraphs are completely unreadable when you don't do double-space. So I'm not sure what "Reddit spacing" is supposed to mean.

Is it "Reddit spacing" because he starts a new paragraph for every sentence? I really don't know I don't use Reddit.

It's fine to not like EA games but it's pretty fucking shitty to basically get the offbrand versions of their shit. I want to see city skylines beat sim city on its merits alone and not necessarily because it's the only one available without origin. I want titanfall 2 to be the game I see my friends playing that made me want to hop in on. Origin will never have the social aspects that steam provides by virtue of their exclusivity alone. When a shitty mass effect comes out, I want to see everyone get refunded and see the developers forced to tackle issues head on like with arkham knight instead of going silent and quietly taking money while acting embarrassed.

They don't have to replace Steam but keep more of their own money instead of giving a third of all your profits to another company, besides if they do allow their games on Steam not only do they lose a cut on every dollar made they do nothing but strengthen and give their direct competitors more of a stranglehold on the market.
Further weakening their position.
All the big companies that have the resources and manpower to create their own platform should take this stance, it's the smart business move.
