what happened to innovative gaming
Being innovative would mean taking a risk and possibly failing while going for a cookie cutter game usually results in somewhat of a success with half the effort.
Open world survival is innovative.
Battle royal is innovative.
Early Access is innovative.
Seems like gaming is better than ever (at least for pc gamers). Console gamers seem to be stuck playing games with 2017 graphics and 2007 gameplay.

I hate to sound like a hipster but that's all in the indie scene
Commercial games nowadays run with budgets in the tens of millions. If you're rich as fuck and it's self funded that's fine, but when you have lenders or a big business behind it that's different; you simply can't afford to increase your risk to such an extent that the potential gains aren't worth it.
