>I think [PS3 is] a waste of everybody’s time. Investing in the Cell, investing in the SPE gives you no long-term benefits. There’s nothing there that you’re going to apply to anything else.

was he right?

I got it for Japanese games
>>
I can't believe it's been 7 years since Gabe died.

Still miss you big guy.
>>
remember when gabe completely backpedalled because they let him put steam on ps3, even though nobody used it and nobody cared and valve doesn't even make games anymore

where were the long-term benefits to that, gabe
>>
>>376907394
>was he right?
Sort of, yeah, but I respect Sony for daring to do crazy tech like emotion engine and cell. It payed off with emotion (although at great costs for developers), not so much with cell.

Still kind of funny that the company that is the most daring with how to do CPUs are the least daring with game design (not counting Japan Studio), but the company least daring with their CPU stuff (nintendo, until Tegra X1 as a chip for a home console) are the most daring in general hardware.

If only Sony could sell off the game division (I know, I know they are the most profitable part) and Nintendo could buy it.
>>
hilariously enough IBM took the techniques it learned developing the Cell and applied them to the 360's Xenon
>>
>>376908089
M$ definitely got lucky there.
>>
>>376908089
There is a interview with Kaz in a playstation magazine he said the Cell was used because it was difficult to program for
>>
You couls say the same thing about the Steam machine or Steam controller.

But the PS3 was not a waste of time for gamers, it had a lot of great games. Fuck him actually, at least Sony makes game. Valve doesn't even make games anymore
>>
>>376908517
It sounds stupid, but might not be a bad idea, if you can guarantee that you have the most attractive platform. Like a de facto Nintendo style exclusiveness
>>
>>376908961
Only Naughty Dog and Insomniac Games bothered to spend time with the Cell.
>>
>>376909126
naughty dogs ps3 output was visually stunning though. Can't say I care for the games themselves.

Would you bang his daughter tho?

Funny how he sucked Sony's dick after they let him put Steam into Portal 2 though. Shame they didn't go further and put Steam into the PS3 OS.
>>
>>376911441
I don't follow Steam or gaming news. I barely visit any website and don't click links posted here.
>>
>>376907394
CELL processors are now technological dead ends, so yes, he was absolutely right
>>
>>376907394

why doesn't this fat fuck just work out?
>>
>>376911569
>Steam into Portal 2 though
They did? that's awful. Anyway I don't buy Valve games since CS 1.6 so I wouldn't know anything about their little affair.

I imagine when you cum she immediately sits up and says I CAN BE REACHED AT [email protected]

The Air Force turned a few of them into a super computer.
>>
>>376911565
That's fake right?
>>
>>376911767
it wasn't entirely awful as you could co-op with pc players IIRC

but it came with a free PC copy so i just played that instead

>3 good games in a consoles whole life is a lot.
>>
>>376907394

Back when he cared about running a business and making games.

Now he doesn't give a shit anymore, he doesn't need to run shit, Valve runs itself.
>>
>>376912069
>Personal taste is law
Never change /v/
>>
>>376912260
Hilarious to think Valve/Steam is where it is right now when the service they provide is nowhere near as good as it should be. Especially these days where they add features no one asked for and then make them worse 6 months later because some shovelware company started moaning that said feature lost them sales.
>>
>>376907394
And later on he said Naughty Dog made the best use of parallelism in the industry and the Source engine is still hopelessly outdated in that regard. The Cell was created because single core was a dead end, and the only thing it got wrong is that most of what the SPEs did in the PS3 can be done in the GPU today with even more parallellism. It was certainly a much better CPU than the Xenon and the only reason multiplats had worse performance on PS3 was because of Pajeet-tier coding.
>>
>>376907394
Given that Sony abandoned the cell architecture, and both they, Microsoft and Nintendo abandoned IBM chips in general, yes.
>>
>>376912646
Just like youtube, facebook and ever other main intetnet thing.
>>
>>376908961
It was Nintendo's stated strategy with the N64. Only good developers would manage to make games for a complex and purposely obtuse architecture.

It worked slightly better for the ps3.
>>
>>376912671
> and the only reason multiplats had worse performance on PS3 was because of Pajeet-tier coding

Or that the ROI did not justify the contortions needed to get things performant on that system.
>>
If we all just went with the Cell wed all be 20 years in the future technologically now
>>
>>376912913
Contortions they would inevitably have to do at some point in the future (like in this console generation) anyway.
>>
>>376907394
meanwhile its 20 fucking 17 and still no source 2 engine
>>
Does the military still use that 100 PS3 console cluster as a super computer or did they scrap that?

even chinese slaves can code better than western devs
>>
>>376908941
But the Steam Controller is amazing though.
>>
>>376912992
Not really, the latest thing now is GPU compute, which is much more standardized than whatever they could provide with the cell
>>
>>376913793
the thing is: either devs stop with the graphics meme or every game will continue to run in 30fps unless you upgrade your GPU every 2 years
>>
>>376912646
what features? steam is stagnant as fuck.
discord completely killed their garbage chat/group system because its so bad.
all the community features feel useless now.
>>
>>376913198
That was just some retarded project, not a real super computer solution.
>>
>>376914183
>steam is stagnant as fuck.
Don't you enjoy all progressive, Greenlight and awesome Ubisoft games? not to mention Early Access and Denuvo.
>>
>>376913905
>graphics meme
gpu compute is not exclusively used for graphics you know, specially on consoles, in which it is essential to compensate for their netbook tier cpus
>>
>>376914272
none of those things are new, and only greenlight is valves doing.
>>
>>376914426
>gpu compute is not exclusively used for graphics
All PC games are unfinished, that's why 4GB patches are standard. I doubt shit like Watch Dogs 2 or Prey are GPU intensive.
>>
>>376912913
I've heard there's was more than a lot of contortion done in babying 360's avx system, which in general received far larger teams and more time than PS3's cell did. Meanwhile all that effort in developing cpu job queuing systems for games with PS3's cell also directly benefited 360 code performance, as well. I'm definitely not saying sony was right, but almost everything sony did was useful at large to the industry. Learning parallelism was a necessity, one way or the other, and it benefited everyone in the end, even if it was a massive headache, not sure I can think of anything similar with 360.
