Is it better just because it's harder? I don't think difficulty is what I want from turn-based games. Difficulty should come from a test of reflexes, not spending more turns buffing or debuffing.

They're not at all similar, Nocturne has minimal plot and the fun is in the fusion, team management and demon busting, though it also has excellent atmosphere. It's a great game, better than P3 and 4 in my opinion, though I prefer 5 to it.
