It's still a decent time sink for I guess. The story is really shitty though (surprise) so don't expect anything in that department. You will probaly have problems doing dungeons on higher difficulties unless you find someone to group with, but the game doesn't have the biggest community anymore.

Also you will miss out on bragging with your gigantic mounts that you spend hours grinding for.

MMOs were good back when it was cool to talk to people on the internet. The novelty has worn off. If you want PvP you will play assfaggots if you want to play alone you'll play rpgs like dark souls.

MMOs aren't resigned for 25+ people to group up anymore. And that makes them lose third purpose.

How is Black Desert faring nowadays? I only played for a few weeks after release and then dropped it for FFXIV.

Well, the quests themselves obviously are your usual MMO fetch stuff, but if you don't enjoy yourself on your way to max level there isn't much for you to look forward to. FFXIV, for me at least, is all about the universe, story and characters. Leveling different jobs, doing their questlines, crafting and shit. The "endgame" consists of doing 2-3 Alex raids a week and that's it. You don't even need very good equip for it, it mainly depends on your group and if they can follow basic instructions.
Also PVP is utter trash in FFXIV.

Now to talk about a Game i havent played in ages: i played Everquest 2 for a while but never realy got into it. Aperently one month after i stopped playing they announced Rise of Kunark which supposedly was the high point of that game and a great expansion.

It also put a large focus on my favorite race from that setting.
Recently ive been looking up the OST and got hit with nostalgia for something i didnt even play.

Anyone here played that? Was it any good? Since EQ2 is basically dead and was never popular to begin with i can bareley find any screenshots or videos about it that arent in french.

The first time you experience the dungeon it is great. Subsequent times you'll be arguing with the rest of the party on which bosses to kill and who wants what sections.

Pretty much every branching dungeon in mmos gets streamlined to the most reward for time spent. Anyone going against this will cause dissatisfaction from the rest of the party.

Anyone got Ashes of Creation on their radar? Idk, I've been giving it a look, but the genre itself has gotten so bland and cliche.

BDO I felt would have been good if I'd had some friends play with. It was close, but just couldn't keep me engaged. If it had some battlegrounds I feel I would have stayed. I didnt mind grinding.

I saw Steam Hammer on Steam the other day, but it looks pretty brown and dull.

Because it applies the most basic online game design principles without any gimmicky shenanigans.

EQ2 was one of the last old school mmos that hit somewhat big. But honestly people just were won over by the sheer casual simplicity of wow which was direct competition of eq2 on release.

Graphics was fantastic for it's time, but system requirements were through the roof also, which hurt retention and sales a lot as wow could run decently well on potato. Gameplay was very oldschool too on release, i am talking about zero solo mobs past tutorial island, you needed the group to do anything. There was the whole camp this named mob for 8 hours thing, intricate multilayer dungeons with zero map functionality, obscene xp penalties on death forcing you to regrind your level twice or thrice over if you die often enough, stupidly long attunement quests for the end game content, crafting that was a game of it's own... Pretty much all the old school mmo design that wow streamlined.

Still it was, together with Vanguard, mmo that grasp the whole idea of world to explore the best, it had some instancing and you needed to load into most of the zones, but the sheer amount of things out there, quests, languages that you could learn and actually speak, dungeons that actually felt like dungeons, was staggering.

Ofcourse all of what made it unique was slowly streamlined to catch wow subs train, Faydwer was the peak i think, it all went downhill afterwards.

I'm waiting on Ashes of Creations to completely die in development so I can give up on ever finding a game in which I can gather and craft while feeling important. Tried FFXIV but it was cancer filled with horrible design choices such as NEEDING a combat class and going through 120 hours of bullshit just so you can get to max level crafting/gathering and be able to do next expansion crafting/gathering on stop of locking the best leveling method which is leves which are then gated by 6 per day for 11? 12? classes.

Shit, old MMORPGs always had trash scores in most gaming magazines back in the day because even back then autistic journalists couldn't handle games that actually require you to interact with other people.

I don't want action combat systems
I don't want sieges or even PvP conquest modes
I don't want survival open world bullshit
I don't want a fucking singleplayer story with shitty writing

I want a regular dungeon crawler in a detailed world, with fun classes and focus on group gameplay.

I want an mmorpg that is basic but well designed.

The only things I disagree with is the Paladin casting a protection spell to get you through traps. Traps detection and removal is rogue business (not back stabby stabby assassinations as so many games make them). The other thing I disagree with is the secret entrance you have to craft a consumable to get in. That should either be a key or a class specific ability like the mage ability to solve an arcane puzzle or a rogue ability to pick a lock.

I'm not against having things only particular classes, or even specializations of classes, can do in a dungeons, or in the world. I'm all for that, actually. They just need to be things that 'that' class should do, not something that leaves you going, "Isn't getting us through a field of traps the rogue's job?"

It's simplified and rollercoaster'd to the max. It's literally single player mmo with instant matchmaking but no one doesn't even talk in chat during dungeons so it's like running with npcs. Been giving Guild Wars 2 another honest "no bias" try. Almost level 20 on my salad guardian, enjoying the game. Trying to not think about how the personal story will turn into being treaherne's secretary, or how a bunch of the living story is locked behind paywall. Not gonna jump on my old lvl 80 character from launch as that would just be confusing after all this time.

Also don't have the expansion so I can't go that far anyway. However, the early game is damned fun, and I always did like the discovery system for crafting.

I bought the game on release and got about 100 hours in it, made it to Orr as an engineer then gave up because the whole zone fucking sucked. I heard they did fix Orr at least post-release. Mainly I just love the art style and world design, combat is alright, and it doesn't have a per month payment so I can just take a break once I get tired of it's shit.

Yeah, I know it was meant for a group. But it was still just packed with enemies that were not fun to fight. Also some public quests were just outright broken and wouldn't finish (was leading some NPC somewhere and we reached the point and they just... sat there, the quest wouldn't continue). I think it can be worth it if you're playing for the first time and you quest through the zones. The storylines are okay and each zone has a self-contained one (something I like is that you get a status on current lore progress through a zone on loading screens). DCUO is trash endgame if you're going f2p. You only get a small amount of in game currency for gear and you can only do them once every 24 hours unless you pay up goy.

I personally am fine with class and possibly gear restrictions in character creation but I should have some way ingame either through a quest line or some sort of process to overcome this.

City of Villains, when it was running, had the best pet class.

You could summon robots, thugs, zombies, demons, soldiers, ninjas, so much variety, and it wasn't all this bullshit of "your summon only lasts for a minute" they stayed out till you desummoned them, or they died, and it wasn't any of that "the summon is just a support for you" shit either, the pets were your main weapon, since maxed out you could have six of the fuckers out at the same time, each having their own roles (DPS/support/Tank) and upgrades, and you could wade into battle with a fucking gang while you sit back and run support on your pets

I can't enjoy Champions Online. I played CoH/V, and it's ruined any other super hero MMO for me.

Been playing WoW lately. I'm looking for one of the three (or multiples)
Good swashbuckling (whether game mechanics, aesthetics, etc)
A fun tank experience (WoW is pretty good. I love my sword and board.)
A vibrant roleplaying community and good setting. (WoW does this pretty well, but I want something new)
I also despise pvp. So anything with open world stuff where I have to look out for edgelords is no bueno.

I'm been dabbling with Final Fantasy 14, it's pretty neat. I like the ability to switch classes, and I love me crafting/gathering classes/skills and how they are actual classes in this game and not just side abilities

Let us analyze what a "WoW-killer" would signify.

It would be a game that can easily be "enjoyed" by millions of people, children and elderly alike. To "kill wow" and take its fanbase over to itself, it'd have to become an even more streamlined, even more casualized, even more mainstream experience.

Why would any self-respecting person with taste in video games want to play such an abomination? If you want to wallow in that sort of cancer, why not stay with the evil you're already familiar with, WoW?

Back in the day of Ultima Online having 100 000 players was a huge achievement and the company was making plenty of profit. I don't think servers are any more expensive nowadays, so why does everyone aim to carry a mountain of gold?

The game definitely takes some liberties here and there with the lore, for example the runekeeper class can call down lightning via writing letters on stone. However, the iconic landmarks are faithfully depicted and quite cool, places like weathertop, rivendell, bag end etc. I can't really comment much on story events as I'm not a lorefag.

In general, I think if you're looking for lore, lotro won't disappoint. What it does disappoint in however, is other critical gameplay elements I mentioned in my previous post. Lotro's f2p model is also very restrictive.
