They patched in a countermeasure to make sure that the most popular character doesn't win by sheer number of supporters alone, so they gave the underdog team in each battle an x3 bonus for adding to the score. It's perhaps not the most ideal solution since the more popular team will still have an obvious advantage in numbers, but it at least gives the other team a fighting chance to win.
